Most likely the body. I had zip tied everything out of the way to tidy up that side of the fender. I thought it was very sufficient in keeping it from rubbing or moving as this truck goes all over God's creation. I was trying to make sure nothing like that would happen.

The investigator wasn't 100% sure either. The wire had gotten so hot on the contact point the wire balled up and welded itself together so it's hard to say for sure.

Its possible the zip tie could have eaten through the wire and then the wire grounded itself. I had the same thing happen before, I ziptied the wire to something, and it ate through the plastic coating of the wire. Luckily the fuse worked in that situation.

a zip tie is a good and bad thing......with the zip tie in that one area, the wire can get hotter were a zip tie than were a zip tie is not.....however if you dont use zip ties then what will you use to secure the wires up.....

I just can't get over it. That was just a really poor design. If memmory servs correctly, the power wire had some kind of ring crimped to it. That would lead one to believe that it was susposed to go directly to the battery. And IMO would put a lot of liability on the manufacturer/designer.

As mentioned, the investigator confirmed that my wiring was exactly as the manufacturer specified in the instructions. I got him a copy of the instructions and was entered into evidence =]

You did get your fan controller from the group buy didn't you? Just wanted to be sure we were talking about the same controller from the same manufacturer.

Not sure what gage it is, but I use a thin wire, basically all it is -one copper wire with plastic coating. I bought it somewhere cheap and didn't realize how thin it was till I got home. About the only thing its good for is tying down parts and wires, its like a reusable zip tie. :icon16:

Yes I was in on the group buy. Optima is in the free and clear on this one.

Oh, I'm definately not trying to discourage anyone from calling to complain. In fact, I bet if I, Bob, or someone looked hard enough, we'd find an SAE or some similar standard that eludes to this very thing.

I was just clarifying some things. People need to understand that it is still possible to have this happen even if it is done right, especially if the problem originates right at the battery.

That would be some awesome info to have in hand when confronting the company! Where would I start looking? lol

It was three months out of warranty =[ 24months on Yellow Tops and mine was 27 months old.

I'm sure when this is all said and done TorqFlo will recieve a bill with a replacement Optima fee tacked on somewhere =]

edit: and a replacement efan which I'm pretty sure I'll avoid on my next truck, nothing wrong with them. Bad experiences just shake ya lol

I think I am going to make this a sticky for a little while since it is quite the fire hazzard and some people don't quite understand the importance of being anal about fusing things.

Yeah I'm definitely going to be more careful in these kinds of situations. I ASSUMED it was okay since it had an inline fuse.

nothing wrong with the efans, it's just a design flaw in the controller. Not Jusnes fault. I want everyone to realize that.

TorqFlo seems to be owned by a company call CompressorWorks. If you have one of these controllers please contact them or else nothing will be done. They should offer replacements if they get enough calls! Get on the phone and express your concern even if you don't have one!
