Hey I'm got everything hooked up on my overhead console but the speed wire, I need to have a better idea of what I have to hook that wire too so it works right. I'm a little confused on what wire, btw everything else works right.

 

eh i never hooked up mine works fine...and honistly i dont where it is on your year

 

its a grey/black striped wire coming off the computer GEM behind the radio bezel on the lefthand side, just splice into it, that way you will get more accurate temp readings.

 

Ok I did that and my temp reading is 16 degrees, and I know its alot hotter outside than that.lol Any ideas?

 

that should not be the VSS, i would be more concerned with the temp gauge its the one with 2 blue wire right? if so it might be bad idk try and hook it up but wow thats off. mines not hooked up and every once and a while it might get stuck on like its first reading like say 74 deg and the temp goes up to 82 and then i restart the truck and it says 82, and fluxuates but never like way off

 

This sounds real dumb, but an easy mistake- make sure its on Fahrenheit not Celsius

 

Well I have the 2 blue wire one and its still 16 degrees and reads ice. I hope its just something hooked up wrong.

 

Tried that and it reads -9 degress celsius when you hit the mode button to switch back and forth.

 

Yeah, and make sure your VSS connection is very good and secure. Mine wasn't and well, I had to drive 60miles to work with no speedometer because I didn't have enough time to get the bezel out and reconnect the wires.

 

okk cool lol so that one is ruled out.. umm double check all of your wiring, make sure the connections for the temp sensor are clamped tight (or however they are done). If anything, have you tried it without hooking the VSS wire up?

 

Yeah we tried, all it does display 16 degrees no matter if we have the vss hooked up or not. my GEM behind the radio doesn't look like this one.

Mine has just a single gray harness coming out of it. Could that have something to do with it?

 

Mine wasn't exactly like that, it had a white push button on the front to take it out. The wire that was needed was on the far side as opposed to closest as this picture shows.

Is there anyway to test the temp sensor to see if its working right?

 

Mine worked the first time I hooked it up. I guess it would either be a bad temp sensor or you got the wires crossed up somewhere.

 

i think there are a set of voltage numbers you can test for, Bob (Rwenzing) would most likely know, what does it do when you take disconnect the temp sensor?

 

Your using the correct wire it looks like for the VSS. I know Bob or John posted values that the sensor reads at, I think it was Bob that did (rwenzing).

 

It displays OC.

I went out to calibrate the compass and while I was driving around it started to go up by 1 degree increments and then I got it up to 65 mph and it finally popped up 86 degrees which I think is right, so I'm not sure if everything is right or not because it should read the temp outside without having to drive it down the road. So I guess I will see what happens tomorrow when I turn it all on.

I've been running around without a sensor hooked up to my OHC since I put it in, and it flashes between -40 and ICE.

Yeah, the VSS sensor is gray with a black stripe. In my 98 it was located in the back left corner, if you are looking at it as it is plugged in.

 

If your console fails to update through the day as temperature rises, that could be caused by the gray/black VSS.

If the temp reading is consistently low by a large amount, that is probably caused by too much impedance from the sensor or its wiring.

Be sure that all of your connections from the console to the sensor and back are clean and solid. Twisted wires and electrical tape won't work reliably.

If the connections are right, then chances are good that you have the wrong temp sensor. The EATC sensor looks identical externally but has 3 times the impedance that the console sensor does.

In the original Explorer application, the sensor connector color codes were:

console:
blue/white
blue/yellow

EATC:
red/orange
pink/black

Keep in mind that the sensors are physically interchangeable in their respective connectors, so it is possible have the right connector colors but still have the wrong sensor.

 

Just noticed this. The way I understand it the VSS signal is needed because the ohc won't update the temp unless the vehicle is moving. This keeps the temp from jumping up when sitting in traffic etc.

 

Well I got in my truck and turned the key and to my surprise and delight it popped up 95 degress on the readout and it is 95-96 degrees with heat index outside right now. So I guess all is well. I'll keep an eye on it for a couple of days and let ya'll know what happens. Once again thanks for all the help from everyone in my time of need.

 

yeah just keep an eye on it I watched mine for three days while driving to make sure it was working. It works and I was concerned that it didn't work for nothing.
