weird problem!

i have an 01 xlt 4.0 with a brand new battery and alternator. seems like the alternator chooses when it wants to charge the battery and it has left me stranded a couple times. i chked the wiring and its fine. i have a scan gauge and when i drive the voltage is around 13-14. when i start the truck its at 11 and sometimes drops to 10 and all of a sudden jumps to 14. any suggestions?

If you’re sure all the wiring is good I’d start with the alternator. Its possible you got a bad unit out of the box.

If you have a voltmeter handy, try the following: Connect the negative lead of the meter to the positive lead of the battery. Then connect the positive lead of the meter to the B+ terminal of the alternator. With the engine running it should read less then 1 volt. If its over 1 volt you have a connection problem.
