Icon5 Lincoln brakes.

Ok, guys, this is not a Ranger, but it is a Ford.

My neighbor drives a '95 Lincoln Continental (expensive Crown Vic). He started noticing that his brake pedal was soft, so he replaced the brake pads all the way around. It needed that, but after doing so, his brake pedal now will go all the way to the floor. He thought that maybe he had gotten some air in the lines, so he asked me to help him bleed them. I did, and we found no air in the lines, but his brake pedal still goes all the way to the floor. The brakes still stop him, and when the car isn't running you can pump the pedal up.

The question is, what do you guys think the problem most likely is? I'm leaning towards master cylinder seals being bad, or maybe something with the booster. What do you guys think?

When that happened in my Integra it turned out to be the master. Different car but same symptoms.

It probably is the master check. Also check and make sure the booster isn't filled with brake fluid. If it was the booster the engine may idle rough and the pedal would feel harder not softer. Also check the condition of rubber lines. They can deteriorate over time and balloon when you press the pedal, causing it to be soft.

I checked the lines, because I thought that might be part of it, they're fine. The engine idles fine, no vac leak. The pedal is more than soft, it goes to the floor with little pressure, I wouldn't trust it to stop me.

Thanks for all the help guys, I looks like y'all pretty much agree with me, that it's prolly the master cylinder. He's gonna run it up to his favorite shop tomorrow to get it replaced, and the booster checked.

He's an older gentleman, who has been dealing with this shop for years. He can't do it himself, and doesn't want to impose on me to do it. He has plenty of money to waste on it, and our apartment complex frowns on us working on stuff it the parking lot.
If it were mine, yeah, twenty minutes to put it on, and an hour to bleed out the system and drink some brews. Done.

I've changed masters in every vehicle i've ever owned BUT the ranger. Take a wild guess what's going out in it? Upgrading that thing too...waiting for it in the mail...

You can also line lock all 4 corners...and start it up and hit the brakes... To make sure there are no other problems...
