How-To: Mustang Dome Light Install
Glad you mentioned 3 bulbs.. All Ive seen online are just 2
Odd, though when i was trying to find bulb sizes for mine (my dome light had no bulbs at all) i found all conflicting sizes for those festoon bulbs.
What length are the map light sections, outer side of connector to outer side of connector?
What length are the map light sections, outer side of connector to outer side of connector?
The bulb length of the LEDs are 1 1/2..the connector length from where the pointed ends of the bulb would touch is 1 3/4 plus the diameter of the ends are smaller ..Looks like the diameter of the LEDs I got is like 5/16

Well i ended up putting in the festoon dome light bulb ehich fit ok.. and just left the map lights that was in it.. which now neither work.. just the dome light works....so i have no clue .. guess ill settle for the dome light working.
you know, I have really been trying to figure out why this mod was so popular. Basically comparing to whats in my truck and trying to figure out the difference. I think someone in the past added this to my truck already. I have a dome light, with switches on either side that light up individual lights...
Crown Vic instead of Mustang
I did a similar upgrade, but with a different fixture from Ebay, I think it was off a Crown Vic. One extra switch is already installed. Above is
the Crown Vic fixture with the lens and reflector removed.
1/4" hole driiled on both sides for extra switches.
I wanted one of the switches to control the cargo light the truck was missing. I added 2 bright bolt style LEDs from Superbrite LED. The switches I ordered from an electronics supplier.
Drilling the stock center brake light
After cutting away unused plastic bulb base to get access for LED mounting
LEDs mounted, I used an O-ring for a washer to keep out moisture.
Mounted back on truck
The new domelight mounted, showing the new maplights. Factory incandescent bulb on the left, LED bulb on the right.
All 4 switches visible. The two I added were for the rear cargo light and a red LED night light on the passenger side. I wanted to be able to have some dim but not distracting light to keep an eye on my dog on long trips.
The cargo light lighting up the bed.
The whole addition went in pretty much the same, with one difference. My 2011 had no green and orange wire behind the headlight switch. I ended up running the wire down the passenger pillar to the fusebox, and tapped into the radio circuit. You can get a nifty adapter that plugs into the fuse socket to do this at most auto parts stores. The draw is minimal, each LED draws .07 amps. The Crown Vic screws in exactly the same with exactly the same contacts as the Mustang one. If you get this style dome light, the reflector doesn't come out easy at all, it takes some careful prying on each barbed tab to get it out without breaking it. I was careful drilling the brake light lens, going slow, using light oil and even pressure so I didn't crack the acrylic. I taped any exposed contacts that might touch the metal roof and ground out.
Cutting the stock brake light housing might be tricky without the right tools. As you can see in the photo I used a step drill (Harbor Freight, worked fine) and to cut the rear molded back away to have enough room to thread the backing nut on I carefully used an 8 inch chop saw with a fine tooth blade. A hole saw might work well also.
This was way too much work in planning, ordering parts and figuring out how to drop the headliner. Lots of measuring and drilling. Then lots of wiring, wire fishing and terminal crimping. But now I have way more than a cheesy single dome light. Thanks to rngprerunner for the guidance to form the idea and help get it done. Now on to seeing if I can redrill my seat tracks....

On my 2004 I tapped into the green and orange wire and put it to the hole it was supposed to go to, but my map lights do not work? Is there another wire I could alternatively tap into in the same area? I've heard some people mention the black/ light blue wire, would that be good?
