This thread is not meant to bash on those who have done this, but to be informative to how the results could turn out. My personal opinion on dye is that only a few things should ever be dyed. I would personally wrap anything before dying. However, there are some pieces that just can't be covered. Something that is not in a high wear/traffic area could be dyed safely. I also feel that cloth should never be dyed, regardless. There are some little tricks that can make it turn out better, but it still isn't great. Most of the time, cloth will get crusty and "dry" feeling.

Anyways, here is the reason I bring this up. We have a Chevy Tahoe that came in the shop. Tan cloth interior, and the owner decided he wanted it black. Now it is in our shop to get everything replaced. Onto the pics.....







Now, it done correctly, vinyl coated pieces or plastic can look decent. But you have to remember, it is still a thin layer of paint on top of the plastic. It has the potential to chip or scratch. It's just like paint on metal. It will still scratch.

 

I am pretty sure beard dyed his interior and his turned out good. But yeah it needs to be done right thats for sure!

 

Terrible! Factory interiors are usually best for durability because the color usually isn't a coating. I said usually twice because some interior parts are painted now, which I don't get.

 

yep. a good example is the sn95 mustang with the 2 tone dash. one color is the molded material, the other is dyed. we have a lady that comes around to do fill/dye work and she uses an oem style dye that she claims will not peel or scratch when it's fully cured. we don't use it very often, but from time to time, we have no choice. a messed with a piece of scrap vinyl she dyed and it could be stretched without any problems. however, this is not SEM dye or anything else you can buy at autozone or walmart.

 

One example that comes to mind for me are 06+ Ford Explorers. The plastic front part of the arm rest behind the door handle is painted. Why would they paint an area that sees so much use? Every used Explorer I've seen is all scratched up in that area.

i'm not saying it can't look good. i'm just saying there is a time and place for everything. to me, dying most stuff is just a waste.

honestly, i don't know what he used. but this is a perfect example of just because you can, doesn't mean you should....

 

Oh yeah I totally agree with you! I wasn't trying to disagree just saying that was like the only good example that I have seen. But I agree 100% that its a waste.
