Fire extinguisher?

i decided im gonna save up $10 and buy a fire extinguisher, can never be to safe, right? but i want it to look kinda good, where should i mount this thing? i want to strap it down with velcro or something in the back corner of the interior of my extended cab, thats about all i could think of, i dont really want it inbetween my two front seats., i was also thinking about putting it in the empty airbag compartment on the passenger side, except then it would be hidden, but its an idea, i dont know, anyone have any thoughts about this?

lifted97ranger 01-12-2007 09:52 PM

if you are going to put it were it is not readily accessible, then dont bother putting one in........if you can't grab it on your way OUT of the truck without staying in the truck longer than you need to to save your ass, then i wouldn't waste your money....

BTW......you will NOT get a worth while fire extinguisher for $10.......a 2.5# ABC (which is only big enough to piss a fire off) with vehicle mounting bracket will run you around $25-$30.......a 5# ABC (still worthless unless you KNOW what to do with it and how to aim it properly...) with vehicle bracket will run you around $30-$35.......

FYI....for $10 you MIGHT be able to get one of those CHEAP, dont work very good chrome plastice ones from AutoZone........

if you are going to get it, then get a good one.....and dont mount it were you can't get to it quick.....

I sell fire extinguishers on a daily basis....if you want a good one PM me on Monday and remind me to look you up a price + shipping....

wtpbmx2003 01-13-2007 08:44 AM

so, i should get one of those big red ones you see in school classrooms? or is the one buzzair has good, cuz i kinda want something like that...... how much did you get that for and where?

optikal illushun 01-13-2007 10:01 AM

ah yes, i didnt even notice it was just a BC. after my alternator caught fire i just went out and bought one to have.

FireRanger 01-13-2007 10:11 AM

B-C will still work on Class A fires. It won't work as efficiently as a Class A extinguisher but it isn't something to lose sleep over.

buzzair 01-13-2007 11:05 AM

I got mine off ebay. Class ABC

You can see my corney zip-tie installation method, but I didn't want it to be bouncing around with me in the cab if I had a wreck or it came loose. I ended up using this one to help put out an engine compartment fire in the middle of the road on a guy's Ford Lightening F-150...he ran across the street and got one from the restaurant while I doused the flames with mine.

Exactly why I put mine in the bed. If there's a fire IN my truck, I wouldn't want to have the extinguisher in there with it! Plus, those things weigh enough to be deadly at even a slow speed!

If you can't mount it securely inside and ensure it won't fly up and hit you, put it in the tool box or somewhere in the bed.

Now check with your insurance company and see if they will give you a discount?
My antique car insurance requires one in the garage for my discount. I like one in the garage and each vehicle. Thanks for reminding me I haven't bought one for the Ranger yet.

As a firefighter let me recommend something.
Unless you can get it on your way out your wasting you time.
A car/truck will go up so quick that you will have seconds to react

exactly what i was trying to say.......dont waste you key strokes....they wont listen.....

a fire extinguisher that will have a vehicle bracket will only do enough to PISS the fire off....

FireRanger 01-24-2007 05:13 AM

If the fire is bigger than what that little piece of junk can put out, the truck will be a total loss anyway. You might as well get what you can out and watch the show because it is going bye bye.

I personally carry a huge one. I forget how many pounds it is, but it is too big to keep inside the cab so it is in the back. I keep one that big for rescue of trapped victims rather than saving the vehicle.

i have 2 10#'ers in my tool box.....that is exactly what i use it for.....i dont care if my truck burns, that is why i pay insurance on it........just stand back and watch the magnesium fly! (suppriesingly Rangers and Explorers have a ton of it on their chassies......)

wtpbmx2003 01-24-2007 04:03 PM

one thing i dont quite understand is how i'd get my hood open if a fire broke out in the engine? i saw an old f150 on the shoulder of i80 a few weeks ago and the hood was open with flames raging out and the firedepartment just arrived there.

if my engine caught fire, i think it would be pretty hard to reach my hand in the hood and try and find the lever to open it up? is there something else i should carry to get my hood open?

lifted97ranger 01-24-2007 04:08 PM

unless you have a crow bar on your truck, LET IT BURN AND DONT OPEN THE HOOD! if you think you must shoot your extinguisher off for kicks, then shoot it in the fender well...
