My Console Project

So I haven't been very active lately, but since I now have a house, with a garage, I have the bug again. I started working today on my new console/sub box.

It is made out of mdf, and I made the template out of cardboard to fit the floorboard up to the dash. I plan to put an armrest on top of the subs, high enough to not interfere. This is in a 94 Splash.

Yeah, I wanted more of an integrated look, to make it look like the bucket seats are supposed to be there. It is big, but when it is finished, I will look like it belongs. When I am done, I may build an overhead console to match since I have a garage now and have the room and tools.

Of course, I am losing my cupholders, but I can always add those to it later if I want.

Haven't made up my mind yet on that. I could mold plastic, I could carpet it, I could fiberglass it, etc... I have experience with fiberglass, so I could just lay a layer around it and sand it to paint it. I also have a little experience with carpeting, so there is the black carpet option.

I just don't know yet. I figure I can do that later after I get it built, I can pull it out of the truck and just do it when I decide.

Ok, the project is done for this week. I have to go back to work tomorrow, but I got the subs installed, and the console is in the truck, just not covered. New pics in my gallery.

I still haven't decided what to cover it in. I am leaning towards carpet or vinyl. We may find out next weekend.

Hey man it looks great, are you gonna incorporate an arm rest above the subs the pivots back? Also a 1-piece grill like on home stereo cabinets would look great to keep the subs clean and dust free..

Still looks good. keep it up.

I am going to put an armrest above the subs, and possibly put some fabric between the two (a good flow-through fabric like on home speaker grills), or something else, I am not sure what to put. I am definitely putting an armrest in though, and it won't pivot, because as of now nothing rattles, and I don't want to create a rattle point. The armrest will be secured with wood screws or decorative bolts no matter what.

I am also going to put another cubby hole/junk holder behind the armrest so that I can store car chargers and the like. I also have to find somewhere to put the distribution block in relation to the console. I may just build a box with a plexiglass front on it and mount it somewhere, not sure on that yet.

I also want to take out the back carpet piece and put mdf back there and secure it to the back wall.

The plan is to take everything out when I get my new carpet and pretty much gut the floorboard of everything that I don't need so I will have more room to mount different things. I may cut a hole in the side of the console (a box of sorts) to mount the distribution blocks in, but it is up in the air.

I have so many ideas for this.
