PLEASE HELP! Speedo and Odo DO NOT work!!!

well here's the deal...
a buddy of mine has (i believe) i '99 Explorer. well i was riding it in the other day and noticed his gauges are blue. i've been wanting blue gauges for a bit and thought "why not just swap the clusters?" so that's what we did today but now the odometer doesn't work for me. we changed the milage on both so that they would read the original milage but his still works and mine doesn't move. i only drove about a mile or 2 since then so maybe i just need to drive more? anyone with any idea of what's goin on would be much appreciated!

So you swapped cluster to get a different color. In the new cluster the speedo and odo dont work?

My vote is the new cluster is crap.

FYI, 95-97 explorers have and green/blue illumination. If his was blue it was modded.

This is my dash, it is modded.

Did you change out the odo correctly by taking the gears apart and making sure not to break any of the little "petals" that connect them together, or maybe you just switched out the whole odo.

Since you have to take the speedo needle off to change the odo, did you push it back on too far? Is it hitting the gauges? This can easily happen when you put it back on.

Also, a 95-97 cluster is going to have a couple of dummy lights in different places.. ^like said by 'nbro3232', check the mechanism and such.. good luck man

yeah i noticed the dummy lights are in different positions cause when my door is open it now says "Fuel Reset" instead of "Door Ajar" haha.

but as far as the odo goes, i just turned the wheels through the slot where the display is. i could see why the odo doesn't work but i didn't take off the needle so i don't know why the speedo doesn't work?? and the trip doesn't work either so i don't know if the odo would affect the trip as well? not sure but still.. thanks for all the help so far guys!

small suggestion that might work. Inspect all the connector tabs on the cluster. If all of them look ok, they may just be dirty. take some Q tips and dip them in Coca Cola/Dr. Pepper/Pepsi (any brown cola), then apply some to the connectors on the cluster and scrub the tabs softly. you should notice a good amount of crap coming off of them. let them dry, then try it again. The acids in Coca Cola and others have been proven to clean just about anything, but I've noticed they work best on metals and help increase conductivity. Remember to let them dry, otherwise you might short out the whole cluster. If this doesn't work, I don't know what will. maybe try swapping them again and see if his original still works in his and vice versa.

If you turned the odo through the hole without removing it you most likely broke the connections between each number wheel. To do it without breaking them you must be able to pull them apart slightly so they dont catch on each other.

I don't know what to say about the speedometer besides check to see if its hitting the gauge. Maybe you pushed it down when you were changing the odometer.

edit: heres one of the tutorials i followed http://www.rangerpowersports.com/tech/?p=131

Most likley the odo is junk.

My advice is get a new cluster.

But take the onl one apart and change the color for practice.

You need to index the needles with the key on.

Then pull the needles off. ( fork works really good)

use a knife to pull the face off

sand all the color off the back side (use a flashlight to check it)

then either reassemble or use glass paint to change the color.

If you reassemble use colored bulbs/leds
If you paint use regular bulbs/white leds

A how to from Griggs.
