re-cover upholstered insert od door panel

I want to swith from fabric to vinyl or leather on the little insert on the door panel above the arm rest. I took the door panel off and there are what appear to be plastic studs that were melted on the inside to hold the panel on. I figure I can cut/drill the melted head off to pull the panel off but how would I go about reattaching it to the door once I did the re-cover?

I am in the process of doing this. I am thinking about using really short screws coming in from the back.

See if one of these will get the job done. If not do a Google (or any other search engine) for "plastic fasteners."

I used a lighter and heated plastic tabs up till they were soft enough to pop off, and to reattach the panel used screws with big washers.

ya i did it to mine....but ya there is a small gap......but if u trim it just right and use a screw in every hole it pulls up nice i used a soldering iron to heat it up and then used 10x3/4 inch trim/panel screws to pull it up tight in the back
