ON the sides of the Console, towards the rear are some plastic plugs, remove tehm and there are four bolts.
That will remove it from the Console.
Then there are a bunch of screws holding the padded part to the support.

The support portion is made of plastic from the factory and almost always cracks and with in time will bend closer to the console itself.
So while you are at it you should go on-line to Rock Auto and pick up a new metal support and get it done… there are directions in the Support Kit that will help you disassemble the unit too.

the Arm Rest feels more solid with the kit.

that arm rest won't have the plate on the bottom of it. it's a cover over the foam, not the vinyl coated ones that the plate works on.

i've recovered a few of those. you have to cut apart the old cover, use it as a pattern, and sew it back together. that's the easy part. the hard part is getting it back in around the hinge area.

alright well i just pulled it out and googled the patent number and came up with this http://www.ptodirect.com/Results/Pat...ery=PN/4867500 so i then proceded to mess with it and after looking at it a little more im thinking that the fabric is glues to the foam so i think im just going to try and make a cover for it and hope i can find a clean way to attach it. Ill let you guys know what i come up with.

Go to rockauto.com select a 2000 ford explorer with a 4.0 sohc and go to "body interior" then "armrest cover" they have a black cover for $8.79
Or buy a black armrest here. You would need the back plate they mentioned above to use this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Center-Arm-R...358677&vxp=mtr
Good luck

well here is the final update on this for the night lol. I grabbed a t-shirt and wrapped that around the arm rest and pinned it to the old fabric as a sort of test to see if i will like the black or not and here is how it came out :)

I'll try and get some better pics tomorrow in the day light but so far im pretty pleased for a t-shirt and a bunch of saftey pins lol

The blk leatherette material will have a little shine to it.

Blk looks too dark with the grey leather seats, how about a gray color, something to match the seats.

What seats are they anyway ?
Look like SportTrac Leather Buckets ?

To anyone… what is under the material on the bottom of the Arm Rest ?

Can the Rock Auto Plate fit ?

Also, looking at the Console, it looks just like a std Arm Rest except the material all the way around ?

Just thinking out loud.

its a different arm rest than the edge/fx4 ones with the plastic bracket on the bottom. rock auto bracket doesn't fit this.

So if the material is removed there is no bottom plate ?

I would have thought it was the same just with material...

nope, not the same. they have foam all the way around. it's probably an inch or so thick on the bottom, and a couple inches thick on top.

OK next question
The base looks like a std shorty ranger console... SO, if you buy one of the arm rest that is vinyl, as suggested before, can you replace what you have with the vinyl one ?

Yes you can. I did this swap yesterday. The console is out of an early to mid 90's ranger. I painted it black with trim paint, and put on '04 fx4 vinyl armrest onto the old style hinge using the rockauto plate mentioned earlier. It's just not cheap.....$130 for the armrest and plate.Rewrapping a shorty armrest?-shorty-armrest.jpg

correct....and the steel bottom plate is $50 from rock auto. If you are converting from a cloth armrest to vinyl, you have to by the plate. I also posted an ebay link for the black vinyl armrest. $68 plus $14 shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Center-Arm-R...358677&vxp=mtr
