Trying to track down a rattle

I know it's near impossible to help on a forum. But I've got a plastic on plastic rattle behind my dash/glovebox somewhere. Anyone had anything similar and what was the cause/cure?

Thanks,

Jerry D.

probably missing one of the little rubber pieces, as in its the glove box shell rubbing the actual dash...

Aye, its new-- try the dealership or....when I worked at the dealership we got a LOT of cars back for rattles (crappy Cadillacs! ). We checked all the panels and trim pieces for tightness, screws and rubber stops/bumpers. Sometimes I used a shot of grease or silicone on plastic on plastic (use on the back side) that was a enough to stop an annoying squeak until the vehicle settles in with some miles on it.

I've got it too on my 07 XLT, I think it sounds like wires slapping steel. I'm going to look into mine soon since I have brought it to the dealership 3 times and no success... Not impressed with my warranty work. I also have a rattle in the driver side behind the cluster, goes away when I turn on the cruise, so I'm thinkin cruise control wire in the cab... Anyways, good luck I'll let you know if i figure it out

you've got to be kidding me, i was just going to post a new about this same rattle when i stumbled across this! my truck is booked into the dealership for next tuesday (this will be the third time for the same rattle!). the first time the replaced the pass. side airbag, the second time they put some foam on the back side of the airbag cover, and it still rattled for a mile straight on my way home today!

man, i think i should have bought a chevy... this ranger has been my first ford, and the newest vehicle and the least mileage i've owned by a long shot! and it's driving me nuts!

They replaced my airbag cover too...that was the second time, then they put some "flock" in the dash another time, then they applied a "Squeek and Rattle Kit" to something which is AKA for they think I'm a sucker and they did nothing. Sucks to hear that about your new ranger man, just check it out yourself I guess... Or call your regional ford rep. thats my next move if I don't feel like taking it apart soon

I think i know what it is...

for the clingy like rattle around the driverside, sounds like its buried in the dash.... i know what it is..... I have the EXACT same thing, and man it drove me nuts for MONTHS.

Ready for this?

its the little metal clips that hold the screws for the lower part of your dash.... apply some silicone caulk and viola, squeak/rattle goes away... Ill take a picture of mine, my lower half of my dash is still in pieces cause i lost half the bolts to put it back together LOL

My dash has a rattle on the driver's side dash. It is more a creeking noise than a rattle. I am just about to beat it out with a mallet.
On the bright side at least it doesnt rattle like a cheap cherokee.

Wow guys, this is what I get to look forward to? Greeeaaattt..... no rattles here but the passenger side carpet was cut about 1/4 inch from the center console so my dealership ended up laying new carpet.... they said about 1/2 the trucks on the lot were like that.

okay, so, after the third time at the dealership (this time they removed the pass. side airbag and installed a dummy switch, to confirm or eliminate the airbag as the problem, after they already replaced the airbag once!) i stopped off at a friends place for the evening. he's pretty well a fresh out of school journeyman auto tech, we went for a test drive for the hell of it. he tracked it down in less that 10 minutes!

it seems to be the heater box that vibrates when the truck is under load at 2100ish RPM and approx 25% throttle. it will also rattle if you torque up the truck at a standstill, or on certain road surfaces, usually poor quality black top, or gravel.

to confirm this, flop the glove compartment down to the floor, and have a friend push on the heater box that is directly behind the glove compartment, mine would stop rattling when pushed on the rear facing surface (in my instance, there is a sticker there) on on the top surface.

good luck!
so on monday it goes back to the dealership to let them deal with it now that i know the cause.
