2009 Ranger XLT 4x4

Helllo Forum Members,

My Name is Glenn, I have been a regular visitor on this Forum since September when I got the "New Truck Bug" and decided to sell my 96 Chevy S10 4x4 that I had since 97, I decided to go Ford because I did not like the style of the Chevy Colorado with the I-5 engine so I decided to get a 2009 Ranger XLT super cab 4x4 with auto trans. I managed to locate one with almost all the options I wanted and got a great price due to Ford's financial problem, I managed to get the Truck which stickered for 26,450 for 19,997.
I am pretty happy with my Ranger but my gas mileage is not as good as my S10 was which had the 4.3 engine with auto trans. and it got around 14 mpg around town my new Ranger is only getting about 12.50 around town which is stop and go to work every day, 6.5 miles each way. I will give it some time to break in, it only has 650 miles on it so far. It has the 5 speed auto and the 3.73 posi rear, came equipped with the towing pkg. I did replace the inside mirror with a Lincoln mirror with built in map lights with auto dim feature, got on Ebay for & 20.00, I also purchased a older Ford Couger Inside dome light with map lights which I plan to install soon, other options I added were black molded bed caps and stainless steel bed rails, Just ordered a Aluminum / black roll up bed cover, hope to have by the weekend, once I install I will post pictures of truck.
Glenn

I would wait to worry about this. I got an '09 in November and my mileage was like yours. After 6 weeks and 2000 miles, I am now at 16/17mpg's. I wasn't thrilled at first either!

2009 Ranger XLT 4x4 Auto MPG

Thanks for the replies, I have been thinking the same to give it to say 3K miles to break in, It has been fairly cold here in north Delaware lately, I am not heavy footed either, most of the time I am at 2000 RPM and don't jack rabbit start either and warm ups are not more then a couple minutes. I guess my 3 mile drive to the WAWA to get coffee on the way to work doesn't help either because it't only 6 miles to work.

Welcome to the forum and hope you like the new truck.

That just stinks! My 91 1500 4.3auto got 21mpgs with 350,000mi on it. The Ranger will do a lot better once it's broke in. I hate to say though I doubt it will be better than your s-10 was.

Anyway, welcome aboard I'll bet we talk you into more mods for the truck.

Howdy. Glad it didn't take you long to start modding your truck. If your truck isn't getting the kind of mileage you want after it has been broken in, you can get a SCT tuner, that will help a good bit. The bed cover that you mentioned will also help your mileage.

sounds about right with the gas mileage. mine was about 13 brand new/stock. then i lifted it and put on 33" tires. it stayed about 13 mpg or so. now i just rolled 8000 miles and its up to about 15.

FYI I have an 08 XLT extended cab 4x4 with a 4.0 and auto trans... so its the same truck you have.

Hello, I also purchased my 2009 in November, Is yours a 4x4 Auto with the 3:73 rear, and your mileage is 16/17 around town ?

Welcome!! 2008 XLT 4x4 here too... 4.0 w/ manual trans & 3.73... I was getting 17/18 mpg w/ 50/50 freeway and city. Now w/ the same 50/50 city and freeway + 33s and BL I'm getting 16/17 mpg. Just rolled 20K miles.
