5.4 Danger Ranger build
5.4 Danger Ranger build
Hello everyone!
this will be my first Ranger build and I'm already running into some issues. I'll start with some background. I have a 95 Ford Ranger 2.3 5 spd 4Wheel Dr. that a friend and I are going to begin building this summer. I have a 98 expedition with a 5.4 as a donor truck. Has anyone done this swap? I am trying to figure out the driveshafts front and rear as well as motor mounts. Any advice thoughts or prior experience would be great

When you pull the 5.4 be sure to time-cert all of the spark plug holes. The fist generation of the 5.4's were notorious for blowing plugs until Ford redesigned the head and increased the number of threads holding the plugs in.
That will be an interesting build. The 5.4 is also a wide engine so I can see a lot of fabrication to get the 5.4 to fit.

Why in gods name would you waste your time on a 2v 5.4? In NA form they make about 200whp, maybe 220. They are nearly as big as a 460 ford in size and weight.
they are very reliable but that's about it.
the spark plug issue isn't as bad as made seem, but if you don't know the history of the motor doing a time-cert is the best options.
Having been around lightnings since 2004 i'm pretty familiar with the ford mod motor family. The heads do not breath well, even ported. The trucks stuggle to make big power. They are prone to detonation if you throw boost at them too.
You'd be miles ahead just doing the tried and true 5.0 swap. If you're dead set on being different, at least do a 4.6, as they are a bit narrower.
