First Ever Truck :)
First Ever Truck :)
Good evening and hello to all! A couple weeks ago I became the proud owner of my very first truck. 2004 Ranger Edge 3.0L automatic 2wd 4.10lsd, with only 117k miles on it. Have already taken her camping and she starts and runs great. Super clean inside and out. I was wondering since it's 20 years old what general maintenence would be best. I was thinking plugs, air filter, and fuel filter? Oil and transmission fluid look new. Any other suggestions? Battery is a touch corroded. P.s. all pic uploads keep stalling at 90% 🫤
3.0's are very reliable motors if you take care of them. I've driven mine for over 188,000 miles over the past 14 years.
Things to note:
The PCV valve elbow/tube on the back of the upper intake plenum is prone to collapsing if it isn't the newer style with the webbing. This is something recommended to replace if your truck is over 100k because it's a matter of when the elbow will collapse, not if.
3.0's are known for timing chain cover leaks. If the area around your water pump/timing cover looks wet, make sure to always watch your coolant levels. It's an involved job to fix, and not everybody has the technical ability to do it.
3.0's are known for camshaft synchronizers wearing out. I'm on my third one in 14 years. The aftermarket ones are VERY hit and miss. Buy a Motorcraft one if you can.
There is a TSB for 2004-2006 3.0 engines due to weak/soft valve seats. This will usually set a check engine light with specific codes, but you may also notice the engine running rougher when the seats erode. The only fix is to replace the heads, preferably ones with hardened valve seats.
That's about all I can think of at the moment. Do some research here on the forum and educate yourself as it will help you keep the truck on the road.

I've browsed a bunch of posts on here and elsewhere before I made the account. I was aware of the head issue this year and will keep an eye on it. Same with cam synchronizer. I've swapped heads and a bunch of other working other vehicles, so I should be OK if problems arise. I'd like to stay ahead of them though.
The pcv value thing was new though and don't recall seeing that before. Mine is smooth. Will check and make sure timing cover is good as well. Only minor oil leak so far was from a slightly lose oil filter. Also wanna check the differential.
Appreciate your quick and detailed response! Will be sure to look around here some more for suggestions.
