well well what to say, I am the new owner of a black 2002 ford ranger 2.3 5 speed flareside with 22,000 miles(no that is not a misprint) My previous truck was an 86 yota with the 22r, which from the drivers seat actually had more torque. I think I may do a build on gas mileage, trying all the different myths and posting the results. Seeing as I just got the truck yesterday it will take some time to gather up all the results(and just drive that far)

well, got my first result back on gas mileage, 197.5 miles on 6.931 gallons, or 28.5 mpg, not bad, I drive 70 miles a day, 35 miles downhill, 35 miles uphill, mostly around 50-70 mph. Now to try not peeling out at every stoplight lol.

Well, that is just the baseline, normal driving, and it is completely stock right now. I want to see how many miles to the gallon I can get out of this truck.

Nice looking truck, I always like looking at black cars, never owning them.

yeah, it being black bothers me, because when I get close I can see every single little hairline scratch, and it just looks terrible to me. plus, although it you can't see it in the pictures very well, the passenger side fender/door has a nice scrape, down to metal, I am going to be looking to get that fixed up, and may have them buff out all the scratches as long as they have it.
