New guy from Texas. (on a quest for knowledge)

hey yall, I have a 1986 4x4 with the 2.9, short bed extended cab. This is my first truck, and have had it for a couple years.

I have recently become a fanatic of offroading (mudding, trail driving, 'rock' crawling, anything off the highway). The only problem is i don't know much about the vehicle, or even mechanics in general, and there is no one I know who does either. Over the last couple years I have done what research I can, and pretty much know what I want, but not how to get it done myself. Is there any magical book I can read to answer all my questions? no? Well then... could someone direct me to a knowledge source involving engine swaps, transmission swaps, axle swaps, awesome baja style long travel arm suspension setups (all I can think to call them, lol), etc etc. Not just how to do it in one specific instance like there are on the internet, actual working knowledge regarding it all. Sorry about the long post, but figured id get it all of out the way at once.

Welcome to RF!

Got any pictures of the truck?

All I can say is continue to scour this site and the internet for more knowledge of what you want to know. There are more than just "how-to's" on this site.
A lot of people who do large engine and drivetrain swaps make project logs that include all of their progress and problems.

I have a few pictures of my rednecktified exhaust and the start of my bumper (both fruits of a very low budget and learning how to weld, be kind), but no decent ones at the moment. Once I figure out to post them they'll be up on this thread,

Welcome.
I'm not sure about posting pictures, but plenty of our members view the site from their phones/ipads all the time.
