New from Texas

Just got a new to me Ranger. Found this jem at a local caddy dealer. 97 Ranger XLT supercab 4x4, 4.0L, 5 spd, manual hubs, manual shift xfer case, D35/8.8 but its open in both ends :(
I'm looking into exhaust and intake for it as soon as I sort out a few little bugs. It will mostly stay stock for now...I sold my 89 XJ (Thats a Jeep Cherokee) that had a 3" lift, 31's, locked in both ends, 4.10's, NP242 case, power everything, 4.0L yadda yadda yadda. Been a long time since I have had a 4wd truck, so I'm excited. I have to learn all this Ford stuff though, especially the TTB system and its ins and outs. I've been through 4 Jeeps over the last decade A loaded out TJ and 3 XJ's...this is totally new way to wheel for me. So, while I will search, helpful links are appreciated from those in the know. Seems like a really informative group here, I'm excited to upgrade my truck.

Welcome... if my eyes don't deceive me, that's a green one, right?

Spitting image of my beat up 96 minus the scratches, dents, rust, 31's, single cab, and billet grille... speaking of dents, my tailgate is dead. Can I have yours?

Lol....no. The one bad thing is the PO did his own bedliner and he did an over the rail thing but most of the stuff is coming off....so I'm gonna sand it down and repaint the bed.

Btw, how does your truck run with 31s? Plenty of power, fuel milage still decent?

It does pretty good. I do drag the shifts out a little bit though, for example, I shift out of fourth into fifth after I hit 70. Otherwise it bogs a little.

Gas mileage is decent. About the same as puttering around sissy footed in a full size, lol. And I'm not sissy foot driving this thing most of the time, lol. Mine is the old Vulcan "Indestructible as long as that cam synchro don't go out" 3 liter engine.

I have hauled lots of stuff in this little truck already... including three bed full loads of apple wood, each about a third of a cord. She didn't even squat. Took off and turned and everything just fine. I think I collapsed one of the rusty leaf spring shackles moving that fire wood though... surprisingly, it still sits level even with the collapsed shackle.

You should be fine with the 4.0 running 31's.

Also, check in the door jamb for a sticker that has specs on it, it'll tell you the gearing that came with your truck. If you got 3.73's or 4.11's, don't hesitate to slap some 31's on.

I have 3.73s. My 4L doesn't seem to run right though.
