Randy in ca.

I have a 2004 ranger and would like to soften the ride, i am open to suggestions, I have done nothing yet, bought the veh. used with 120,000 miles, and I think nothing has been done on it for some time.

Welcome to R-F!

I'd start with new shocks, then just go through the rest of the suspension and replace anything else that's needed.
