I'm Tom from the awesome state of unnatural gas prices and high taxes of Indiana. I have had my 97 Ranger for 3 years now, and its one truck I don't see myself getting rid of for a long time. I work as a Diecast Machine Maintenance dude at a small town factory in Albany, Indiana.

I do have one question....is it normal for a 4.0L ranger to get about 12 to 15 mpg?

Uhh my 4.0 gets 18 - 23 mpg

 

hmmm...i usualy spend $8 a day depending on gas prices, going to work and back...at the moment its $4.16 here...

how many miles on the 4.0? whens the last time you have done maintenance?

 

123k miles and i did oil change, tran fluid, and spark plugs at 122k

what about fuel and air filters? axle fluids?

 

I gain a good almost 2MPG changing the fuel filter and switching to sythetic oil. Now I switched to sythetic oil at the same time so not sure if the oil made any diffrence

 

Yeah my 4.0 gets roughly 19 on the highway, 16 in town, 12-10 out in the woods and towing, and when i hit sand i get 8. which reminds me i should change that fuel filter

I get around 15 city and 18-19 highway with 33" tires in my 4x4. 12-15 sounds a little low. How do you drive it? always flooring it? Do you have larger tires? is it 4x4?

hmm i changed the air filter and fuel filter today and filled it up, i'll see how it does

 

I swear I go 24 MPG out of my Exploder with a Pushrod 4.0 a couple weeks ago. when I actually drive it I average 20 or better. I get 13 in town though as I only drive a mile to work and back.

My 4.0 ranger I was happy if I got 17. I find it odd though as they both hav/had 4.10 gears. There is no reason for this beat up explorer to ge thte mileage it does.
