I think he's probably talking Lightning 5.4 or Cobra 4.6

If you wanna do it man, go for it. It will be expensive and difficult. If you're not a pretty accomplished mechanic, I hope you have a DD to get around with, so you can afford the long downtime it will take. I guess the same goes even if you ARE an accomplished mechanic.

Also, it would be good to have a donor vehicle already so you can pull anything you need. Just having a motor won't get you anywhere. You'll need all kinds of little things.

To fit the 5.4L you'll need to move the firewall back, I know that for sure. You're looking at alot more than just a new motor also. Transmission, suspension, etc. plus necessary upgrades to brakes and such for the higher output motor. To get it all to mate up to your transfer case and 4wd, you're looking at even more complications. To be honest, I don't know that it would fit. You'd be looking at a TON of custom fabrication. If it COULD be done, I don't even know if it would be feasible. Then you get to dine into engine electronics and making it work electronically.

I'm not saying it's not possible, it has certainly been done, atleast in a 2wd. Don't think it's a "hey, I think I'll drop this engine in my truck in a weekend and go really fast" thing, or you're in for a world of hurt.

Maybe he's thinking the Thunderbolt kits. If that's what your talking about, I'd say do it. IT's your truck, do what ya want. But in my personal opinion, no. But, components look good, like the dual exhaust, the wheels.

There's a '98 4x4 Ranger with a 4.6 sohc and I have a '98 2wd with a 4.6 dohc. The dohc would be more difficult to fit in a 4x4 (and torsion bar 2wd) because there's 4" less room between the upper control arm mounts. Four inches in an engine swap is huge.

If you do try this, you'll have to decide on a transfer case. The guy with the 4.6 sohc used one out of an Expodition. Or you could use the 5.0 Explorer's AWD and swap tailshafts on a 4.6 4R70W trans.

The other major mods I know you're looking at are AC (deleted or changed), steering shaft rerouted, motor mounts, and exhaust.

Good luck.

Greg

If your talking about the engine have fun sitting on the jump seats, if it's the body kit thing, why do it if your gonna offroad.
