Adding RAP and removing CSM

Iv'e had a memory seat in my 01 XLT 4x4 Off Road for a long time now. Right now, my 01 is at my cabin in NC and is only used when I am there but, my son has been living with me since March and he turns 16 this fall. He'd like to drive the 01 once he obtains his license.

I have the RAP, keypad, etc. that came from the same vehicle as the seat. Using the keyfobs, you can move the seat based on which one was programmed in first. I'm thinking of removing the CSM in the 01 and installing this RAP.

Can anyone think of any negs regarding this type of mod?

In the schematics, it looks like the connectors for the Ranger CSM match those of some of the Explorer RAP modules, at least in pin count. Or you might need to get the Ex pigtails. It seems like it should be possible to make the memory seat work with all the wires in the right places.

The RAP's memory seat by keyfob feature is cool. My son and I finished the parts of the install that I had planned on doing.

I didn't mount the keypad - I have another idea for that.

You're going to have a bunch of conversion to do, I believe. The Explorer RAP's in general require external relays for most functions. Although similar, and using the same connectors, the wiring is QUITE different.

I went and got some Explorer RAP's hoping to get the alarm feature, but I decided it was going to be too much trouble.

If you get one from a JY, take out the board and look. If you see the black relays all over it in the same configuration as your Ranger, you may be okay. I haven't seen the latest Explorer RAP's so they may be different. But my '02 has the relays for the doors and horn integrated into the CSM and so the Explorer one's I got wouldn't work.

Bob, is the '02 Explorer RAP more like the Ranger with relays integrated?

Don't know. I have never seen an 02 Explorer CSM.

I had ALL the RAP parts including the original keyfobs from the same 01 Ex. It is already installed into my 01 XLT except for mounting the keypad in the drivers door. I like messing with this type stuff so all the wiring, adding relays, etc. was not a big deal, especially since I have already installed an 02 Sporttrac CSM and keypad into my 02 Edge.

The 02 Ex CSM is a little different. I have one (and it's related parts) sitting on my bench at home and will investigate the ins and outs of it later. It does use external relays. It also uses a diffent protocal (UBP) for programming/trouble shooting.

If the 02 Ex CSM can't be used in a Ranger, I will go ahead and cut a hole in my drivers door to mount the RAP's keypad.

That's great, Zimmer! It's something I wanted to mess with, but thought it wouldn't be worthwhile. Looks like you're proving me wrong and I'm interested in your work -- please keep us informed!
