d-ring for back hitch

i went to tractor supply the other day to after i read the thread about tow ropes and d-rings....i wanted one for my rear hitch...holy crap, them things are $35!!!....from th elooks of it, i can prolly make one!! i dont a welder, but my papa does...do yall think if i can find on old reciever and some thick guage metal, we can make my own....that will be stong enough...im thinking yes...but im not sure...

i could take an old reciever, cut the part off where the ball goes a,d somehow mount a piece of metal there with a hole to recieve the d-ring....any more ideas....or is there a place i can get one cheaper!

How big of one do you want? I already have 2 made that will work with a 3/4in pin d-ring.... Just let me know and I'll pick up one for you this weekend.

ok, with trepaul's help ive decided what im going to do about fabing my own d-ring receiver. im going to have the michine shop at the local comm. college make this for me (its free!) ill take a 2" x 2" x 6" piece of solid steel. trepaul said to drill a 5/8 hole on one end for the king pin, and then on the other end, instead of welding a piece of metal on, ill just have them grind it down into the shape on the picture...

this is the basic shape of the ones you can buy, so i think it will be great, not to mention very strong because there are no welds and is a solid piece of steel instead of tubing...

Just a heads up, because mine are welded doesn't mean they're not strong. Know what a weld holds? Minimum 58,000psi tensile strength. lol

oh im not saying theyre not stong welded, i know they ARE....i like the look of the milled version better. and yes, they'll probably hate me, but hey...they're there to learn. i just want a d-ring reciever or whatever that thing is called!

when its done, im going to paint the part that goes in the hitch black, and my d-ring red to match the truck!

I made my 5/8 hole for the pin 2in off the end and then the sq tube I used is 7in long and slid the stock inside the tube and welded it all around.
