Good friend from work is getting me a deal on a Dana 44. Not sure what its coming off of, gears etc. But i was told it would cost no more than 200$. So my SAS is alot closer than i thought. Will know more information about it tommorow.

Depending on the width of the D44. I don't think it's a full width, so i might just throw a 31 spline exploder axle on it.

 

Here's one with 38.5 TSL's and 11" of lift...kind of what i'm going for.

 

you do realize thats an *** of work on an IFS ranger right? if you look on here then youll see i did some research and found a lot of stuff that you prolly wouldnt think of. with your truck (im assuming its an 03) youd have to literally hack off a LOT of stuff from the front. just warning ya and if i had the nerve to do it id be all over it.

 

I've done more research than probably the people that have done a SAS. Yes i know what i have to do, i know what i have to get into.

 

yeha ive talked to jey about a lot of the proceedures needed to be done and he sort of schooled me a bit on it. Kindergarten schooling, but schooling none the less


Thats awesome, jey, I think im gonna wait a while and not lift my truck then when the time comes where i can, ill SAS it. but ill probably just pay someone, just to be sure.

 

I think it's alot more gratifying to tell people, "yah, i did that myself". Instead of oh ya so and so installed it for me. Plus, when i get the word out that i did it. I may bring in some "business".

I figure if the D44 is off a leaf truck, i'll just use some spring over leafs. But if it's coiled, i'll use some long-arm radius arms, and the lift coils off of my friends grand cherokee. I'll gather parts in the next few months and get me a Yamaha R6 to drive while i do the SAS .

 

yes it is a lot more gratifying, but research it to death and whitout the hands on experiance it can still be a daunting task. I figure this way: In any consequence im gonna pay at least 1500 or so to get lifted high enough to where i feel satisfied, RCD will be about 2k, so why not just collect all the parts, know exactly what I want done and how, and give it to a group of people that will guarantee their work, that has obviously been great in the past.

just a little more peace of mind. Now if my truck was a trailer queen, yes id hack it up myself, but that wont be for a LOOOOONG time, if ever.

 

Might as well do it as soon as you can, that way in a couple of years, i'll have alot more experience and knowledge than people of similar age as me.

 

Yeah but im not quite comfortable with destroying any sort of value my truck may still have. If you SAS it and get in a wreck and total it, its worth ****.

 

If I SAS it, and wreck it, it'll become a buggy and get rebuilt from the ground up :)

your 3.0 is gonna have a fun time turning 38.5's...

 

4.88 or 5.13 gears will help, depends if i want to put a 4.0 in or 'blow the 3.0.

 

 

and where are you getting the money for this stuff??? lol if your just goingt o put a dana 44 up front which way are you going to do it? are you just going to put leaf springs on there or you going to go the other way? and how much lift you going to put on??? b/c then your going to have to go through the task of finding a half lift for your truck and a half lift for the 44... also if you dont mind me asking, how old are you? and what experience do you have with trucks and what not... different steering component the geometry of the front will be different... what exactly are you getting for this project and are you going to do it by yourself or do yo u have some one else to help... sorry about bombarding you with questions but i am curious...

 

Thats fine but do you already have an alternate vehicle? Will you be able to afford an alternate vehicle and build up the buggy? Just a few things to consider cause an SAS is an awesome but huge step. I dont know how hard you wheel but ive decided that I dont wheel hard enough yet to take full advatage of an SAS. I know IFS sucks but ive seen some IFS rigs own some trails. And unless you aretrying to conquer Rubicon or similar trails a SAS can be worked around.

 

It's not something i'm going to do in say 2 weeks, I'm just now starting to gather all the parts. The axle is off of an early 70's scout. So the width will be fine. I'm going to use coils, long arm radius arms. Going to see if i can get the steering box off of the same scout the axles are coming off of. I already have a donor vehicle, my friend has a early 90's grand chero with 5.5" lift and 35's. I will be using his stock springs first, measuring clearance/height/etc. and then use the 5.5" lift springs and do the same. As for steering i'll use the scout box, probably a high-steer kit if applicable, or peice it together. I'm 19 in may, been working on cars/trucks since i can remember. 2 more quarters and I'm graduating the automotive technology program at my local college. I've been a technician at a local Dodge dealer for almost a year. I've lifted and slammed many a trucks, i've made a 1" square tubing subframe, with diamond plate skid plate for my truck.

My friend w/ the grand chero will help me with it, since i am going to help him put full width D60's on his. I know a guy at a local drivetrain shop who can make me a driveshaft for a cheaper price. The rear i will probably, depending on how much lift i want/need to match the front, have some packs made.

As for what am I getting? If i understand you right, a badass trail truck, alot of experience, and a unique truck to show off my capabilities when i want to go into this type of business.

 

any update on this? im collecting/looking parts as i type. any new info you have will be great.

 

check that axle IIRC scouts were passenger side diff?
