Ive always figured it went in this order from deepest tone to quietest: 4.0L OHV, 3.0L, 4.0L SOHC. The OHV engines have always sounded deeper to me.. like a 5.0L vs a 4.6L, every 5.0 stang (with an aftermarket exhaust of course) ive heard has a nice deep tone to it, but the 4.6L is more performance sounding, higher in the RPM's niceness. Like i've heard a 4.0L SOHC at idle with a 40 series and thought it was quiet, compared to my 3.0L. But I like the sound of a 4.0L SOHC in the upper RPMs v.s my 3.0L which screams bloody murder haha

SO basically the 3.0 sounds better than the 4.0 all around??

Or atleast better than the 4.0 SOHC? I might consider buying the flow 40 then.. whats the best set up (piping size) ?

*I* think it sounds better, but for sure deeper, you might do a search for some exhaust sound clips and draw your conclusion lol.. go no bigger than 2.5" for piping. I think my dumped setup sounds good, its one of the setups that'll be the deepest sounding, if thats what youre after, and if you offroad, i heard having dumps v.s. tips is better in that sense, good luck with your decision!

i have 2.5 piping, it doesnt sound like rice at all, and you sure can hear it in the cab lol.. if i leave my truck idling outside and go inside my apartment upstairs i can hear it..dumps is much cheaper than having duals and tips, because all they have to do is weld up the flow, then weld some turndowns onto the muffler

BJ in your opinion does a dumped 40 series sound pretty close to a duel tiped 40 series. Tone and volume?

A guy at my school has a 40 series with dual tips on his 3.0L ranger, it is overall more mellow compared to dumped, quieter, and different tone in the upper RPM's, but it's still a 40 series and you can tell by just hearing it..

depends on what you want, really.. before my SI/DO 40 series, i had the SO version of it which was more mellow, i liked the upper RPM sound, but didnt like the quieter idle

what im looking for is something fairly agressive at idle, and when i get going you can hear it, i have an auto so.. i cant really keep it in first to rev it a little.

get 40 series original SI, DO and dump it before the axle.........thats pretty loud, alot of drone inside the cab. I have mine exiting the rear bumper and its pretty loud. Has a nice rumble to it noticeable sound inside the cab, and not annoying.

Here is one that I got, i started in 1st, shifted to second and floored it. My computer was sitting in the passenger seat

This one, I took of the computer inside the truck, reved it a little. Then it goes to a clip with the computer [recording]sitting up by the left hand front tire
