I was thinking about buying an extra set of roof rack cross bars that I found on ebay for 25 dollars and using one of them as a light bar. Would this work or do off road lights need to be grounded, like on the bumpper? could I ground them on the roof rack cross bar some how if they need to be grounded? Would it even work and not melt the cross bar? I would need them to be removeable is the thought behind this. I would need to some how fabricate a plug that would be protected. Maybe under the hood near the battery or in the cabin near the switches. Any one got any suggestions for me?

 

Im confused on what you want....but no they dont have to be grounded....at least my KC's dont.....you have a positive and negative wire.....

Ive always wanted to get a roof light bar have 2 lights going forward and 2 backwards, but i dont wheel my truck anymore so i dont need it

The roofrack idea will work, and has been done alot. Get a "weatherpak" plug kit, so you can disconnect the wiring, and remove the entire bar.

I have lights on my roofrack right now....

 

over head lights are a bit of a problem off roading in the woods
great for open field or desert wheeling - but in the woods they catch on everything
run two wires from the fenders to above the lights to help run branches over your set up

 

Not to get off the subject, but those of you who have roof racks, do you have any pics? And where did you get them. I have a supercab 2 door 98 Ranger. Any one with suggestions of where to buy?

 

I have had a few Ranger people get the KC Universal light bar from me. Depending on the year of your truck will determine if you need the gutterless kit. If you have rain gutters above your door frame then you would not need the gutterless kit. KC Makes a kit for the 2000 Ranger, and that is what the ranger people have been buying, then they are changing it to fit if needed. Some people say they need to bend i a little, others say they can do this conversion without any mods to the kit. But anyways, here are some pictures.

I have a Sport Trac. The problem is that it has a sunroof and a integrated roof rack. So I am not sure that the KC light bar wold work. It was my first thought though. The reason that I want to do this is because I drive up a canyon to work each day (65 miles one way). I want the ability to have the extra light when needed and removable at other times.

Basicly I want to mont 3 or 4 KC's to the cross bar (the bar going width wise) with a plug, probabaly the weatherpak one Chuck sugested, so I can remove the them when needed.

I don't really want/need them for offroad adventures, so much as ilumination on dark canyon roads. For christmas I bought my truck a westin one peice bull bar with brush gaurd (and off of the subject a little but I also got her a set of Aries Automive tail light gaurds too) that I plan on monting lights to for off road fun.

 

i thought you said "off road lightning" ....i was about to stab you.

 

iv seen lights mounted to yakima racks.. and you can get the yakima kit that utilizes your stock cargo/sport rack. But I see you got it covered already. Best of luck.
