Question about dual exhaust

i am planning on buying a dual exhaust cat-back system for my 98' 4.0L.
do you guys reccomend any certain kinds or brands for this truck? it is 4x4 ext. cab. i have been looking at the dual extreme from Gibson, and also at dynomax. let me know what you think.

Personally I like my Flowmaster. It is only a single, but it is great and on my little 3 liter it sounds nice. Not ricey at all. So I say Flowmaster

I like my Dynomax kit. It was the most affordable at the time ($190), has excellent fit and actually sounds decent with my four cylinder feeding it. With a V6 I'm sure it will sound even better. It's not excessively loud, but has a nice deep sound.

Magnaflow or Borla. Those two get my vote.

Not to thread jack, but do you think there is anything wrong with going down to your local TMA and having them do a custom exhaust? They told me they have a guy that bends the pipe himself and that a single exhaust would cost $150. Is it worth it, or are name brand exhausts a lot better?

is that $150 with a muffler? if so, thats not too bad for a single exhaust. there is nothing wrong with getting custom work done, but just keep in mind that most cat back systems are mandrel bent, using higher quality and better fitting parts

Cool man, I will probably end up doing that just because I can't afford a 300 dollar exhaust. I might go dual, though, and get stainless steel tips because it would probably be worth it to upgrade it right away.

One last question. A custom exhaust will have a lot better performance than my stock one correct?

You wont notice much of a difference with a stock motor.

Yea, with a tuned catback exhaust you won't notice much of a difference. Do an intake & exhaust & you will notice a touch more. Add a Bama Programmer you will probably notice a tad bit more. You see, with these bolt ons your not getting huge amounts of HP but if you add all 3 together I bet your pushing in the neighborhood of 20 more horsepower which you should be able to feel, I know I did on my F-150.

I plan to build a Dynomax single exhaust that dumps just in front of my rear axle. I will use a Dynomax race only bullet muffler and some 2.25" and 2.5" tubing. I'm going to do all the work myself, and it will run about $65, including shipping for the parts. I figure it won't be too loud, but on my 4.0L it will have a nice deep tone to it.

I did something similar on my truck, I got a glasspack $25 from advanced and when to a local muffler shop n got a 3ft-ish 90* bend and 1-ft-ish stright piece flared to the "ball" where normal cat backs hook up allong with clamps, a hanger and all the cat-back mounting stuff (bracket n bolts) for $35! IT exits infront of my rear tire which is different but i like it. pretty loud tho, some people would probably get anoid with the resonence(sp?) in the cap but its been on for months n it still puts a smile on my face when i gun it lol

i can take pics if anyones interested

EDIT: forgot to mention the guy at the muffler shop put a little s-bend in my short 1ft piece so it wouldnt touch the tranny-mount crossmember. not bad for 35 bucks eh? Also i used 2.5" aluminized tubing

i just put some flowmasters on and it sounds GREAT!!!!!! Im new to the truck thing so im not to sure about gibson, dynomax, and magnaflow. I had magnaflow on my 4cyl ford contour and it sounded beast. Not ricey and it was a 4 cyl. It had more of a deep sound to it....So im not sure if it will be better for the 6 cyl. Maybe.......Good Luck

It all depends how much you want to spend too...I have a magnaflow on mine, sounds nice, but it was pricey (stainless steel). Borla Being most expensive and magnaflow coming a close second, flowmaster probably being 3rd

hey guys, ok i want to do a true dual on my ranger, like 2 mufflers instead of the one inlet and dual exit muffler, its a 92 4.0 v6 standard so my question is what size pipe would be good? i dont wanna go too big but dont want too go small, and im thinking of going with flowmasters on this one, what flowmasters would you guys recommend? i want something that sounds mean..... as for the bending i can get it done cheap at my exhaust shop so thats not a biggie, any help is appreciated.

92 ranger 4.0 v6

one thing about true dual is $$$$$$$$$$ due to space limitations you gotta get small mufflers like the hushpower 2 from flowmaster its not as loud as the 40 series but it sounds good. I'm planning on doing this on my project what im going to do is put in two high flow converters and a dynomax ultra flow x muffler, its like a cross pipe and big tips for tone. I'm also going to use whatever size pipe the headers are going to be. I havent gotten that far yet right now the engine is in parts and I'm cleaning everything up.

well space wont be too much of an issue cuz im moving the gas tank in the bed and i have the room on the passenger side, the only space problem im gonna have is running the pipe from the drivers side header back cuz i have the transmission crossmember and the driveshaft for the front in the way so its gonna be tight unless i mod up a crossember that doesnt have crazy funky bends in it.

You're not going to get much a gain from a "true dual" on a Ranger unless you are running some crazy modded V8 or something. It's really not worth the cost and you can actually hurt performance by having too much flow on a V6 like we have. I have been happy with my single output Gibson exhaust system. On my '98 3.0, I had a Flowmaster 40 SI/DO that sounded great but didn't help performance any. I would put my money on one of the exhaust kits like Gibson, Magnaflow, or Borla offers. It is only going to sound slightly better than stock but don't expect a massive gain in power.
