Brake J-O-B...

I have a question on the caliper slide pins (? if thats what they are called) on my wife's 06 Saturn Vue. I know this is a Ranger site but I think we have all done a few brake jobs on other cars. On those pins that have the little rubber sleeve over them at the bottom of the pin, what are they there for? The caliper doesn't seem to be moving in or out freely at the pin, I pulled it out and added some wheel bearing grease to the port but I could not slide the pin back in with that sleeve on. I cut just about and 1/8th of and inch off the end of it because I ripped into it a bit and it went back in easier but not easy as the other pin.
