Trigger01's '86 Project Thread

Figured I'd make a progress thread for the '86 so I didn't have 20 different threads.

I'll just quote my first two threads.

Right now it's not getting spark so I bought some parts tonight and I will start working on it this weekend. I will bring it home on Friday. I need new tires and it needs a real good cleaning. It's been sitting for a few years, but my friend had it running about a month ago. Enough of the babel, on with the pics!

I got them from a friend that used to have a 4wd Ranger. Had new tires put on the 15's. The are 205/75/15's, stock for that truck is 185/75/15. It had 205's on it, but they were all in worse shape than I originally thought. I'm bring it home tomorrow. Expect more pics. tomorrow.

Before:

Believe it or not there is 7 wheels and tires in there(1 full size spare for the red truck, 2 225's on deer hove wheels, and 4 new ones for the '86).

After:

While I was laying under the truck today I realized how much nicer it is to work under a lifted truck than a lower truck.

Center caps will go back on after I paint/clean up the wheels. How about that red interior fellas? You know you like it!

Planned to get a lot more done Saturday, but the truck had wasps nests all over it and I got stung and I'm allergic so I ended up talking Benedryl and sleeping all day.

Tuesday night:
Replace the neg. batt. cable and the battery tried starting the truck and didn't succeed, but I expected that. Also took the valve cover off and ordered a new seal and plugs and wires.

As it sits in the garage now:

There are quite a few new parts sitting on the left side of the picture in all that mess, and a few of them are old parts off the '01.

That's it for tonight boys and girls. I'll be working on it all day Saturday so more updates then.

If you want this one let me know. I'll probably sell it after I get it running or before if someone wants it.

Nice truck buddy! Looks exactly like my '88 ranger out back... most dependable truck I've got for its age.. starts up and never seems to stop!

Not really planning on doing much more to this truck than getting it running and driving it.

There is no hole. It's just surface rust. I plan to sand and paint the roof at some point. That's low on the priority list though.

Best update I can give yall as of now. I took more stuff apart on Saturday, but didn't get very far It was nice being able to take the hood off by myself, it's a lot lighter than my '01. If I get anxious tonight I may finish taking out the distributor, otherwise it'll be tomorrow. Picture as of now:

Looks like theres barely anything in that engine bay.

Anyway the truck already looks a thousand times better than it did.

Thanks to the help of RF, I got the distributor out, took me less than a minute. I'll put the new one in tomorrow. I was really itching to see how hard it was going to be to get out.

Well, I went to install the new distributor this evening and it doesn't freaking fit! Blah! So I called the parts house and they have another one I will grab tomorrow and hopefully it'll work. I was hoping to have this thing at least half way put back together.

Update: I went and got a new distributor, different brand, different store, same stinking problem! Anybody have a good distributor that will fit in a 2.0 4cyl I don't care if it's used.

I got the distributor in today. Third on I bought and it didn't fit either. So i sanded it down. It was off by 3000ths of an inch. I got the cap and rotor on too and did a few other things and had to go back to the parts house and never got around to working on the truck again so that's where it's at.

Nah, I don't have it back together yet. I have to clean out the spark plug holes, there's oil in two of them I have to replace the valve cover seal and change the brain, plugs and wires and a hose and put a hose elbow back on. Oh, I need to change the oil too.
