Engine swap ideas?
You can try the 4.0l SOHC
Your 4.0l OHV is rated at 160HP, 4.0l SOHC is rated at 207HP
Same transmissions
But would need to change computer and wiring harness, and these would need to come from 1997-2000 Explorer with 4.0l SOHC to match transmission
The 4.0l SOHC engine can be any year, but 1997-2004 need to have the timing chains and tensioners updated
I personally DO NOT think this is a good swap, since you can just go out and buy a 2001-2011 Ranger with factory 4.0l SOHC
And overall it would probably be cheaper to do that if you consider your labor to do that swap
In my opinion changing engine models in a Ranger is a V8 or nothing, because the factory never sold V8 Rangers so its unique
And that's engine/trans, computer and wiring, so almost the same amount of work

I did the 5.0L Swap on my first Ranger and it made it a whole new truck.
I would only suggest a 5.0L Swap, there is plenty of them in the JY, there have been a lot of Ranger that have seen the same swap so info is available, and the amount of performance part is staggering. If you find a decent Explorer (exact year I can not say) you can get the engine the harness and maybe even a new tranny.
As stated I don't believe the costs will be a lot different from a reman. motor or another V-6 swap but the performance will be there far beyond any V-6.
I also got 20 mpg from my 5.0L, not bad and a lot more fun to drive.
