Names

Why do we have to display our names at the top right?

I noticed it yesterday and went into my user control panel to remove my last name! That's when I discovered that the user CP requires you to enter a valid zip code now! Boo!

i added that yesterday... i thought it would be nice to be able to see member's names when they post..

i can make the zip codes hidden, as they are used for your weather report on the homepage.. other member's don't need to see your zip code..

I noticed it yesterday and like it. I have no problem people knowing my name. Plus I like seeing others names, seems to make things just a little more personal, more friendly.

Cool! I like that alot. Now I know who everyone is (almost)

I was gonna suggested making it a requirement to post your name in your sig, but now I guess I dont have to!

Ah, that makes good sense. I get annoyed sometimes when you only know someones handle and not their name. Of course, they can post a false name -- but why?

Privacy folks should keep in mind it is NOT hard to get information on someone if it's wanted bad enough. I wouldn't go so far as to post you SSN, lol, but you can get info on people if you want to. Hiding your name here does remarkably little if someone really wants to know about you.

at the meets i go to, i never know people's names.. just their screen names, cuz it isn't just available on every post... you have to go into their info to see it...

i like it more this way.. the names have always been on user pages, just not on every post...

Yet the first thing in your sig is your full name?!

I'm not at all offended that people on forums like this don't know my real name. 'Bubba' is close enough.. Even if you ever meet me in person!

I like it b/c now I don't have to go up to people and say, "I'm MrRngr94", although I've been tinkering with getting a shop shirt with a MrRngr94 badge for meets.

I think the first name is fine, I don't like the last name though. And someone asked why, because there are some crazy *** people out there. It gives me a sense of privacy, it I wanted people to know it, I would tell them. Espically with my last name, if someone had a grudge or something, I wouldnt be hard to find.

If I didn't want my name known, I'd have never entered my correct name in the details.. then again my screenname IS my real name, so obviously its not a problem for me.

Maybe a good compromise would be to only show first names on the posts and make people "dig" for the last names?

I don't mind people knowing me...I have dished out my SSN so many times for the military, my name isn't going to matter. I am proud to be a 'Hardin'. Heck, I posted my cell phone and address on here before, I think. Well, when i was in the states anyway!

Here, if someone eants to come see me, here is my info:

Okinawa, Japan
