with an auto unless u have mucho horsepower and torque there is almost no way to light em up good without using the brakes.. but really once they are rolling pretty good u can back off the brakes a lil and still hold it there or just get a line lock... as for a manual ive always stood on the brakes a lil while giving it some gas and lettin the clutch out get em rollin then let off the brake

I think I need more HP or better technique.. I can light 'em up but once it gets rolling at all it just grabs and goes... I've never been a big fan of using (abusing) the brakes to do standing burnouts.
