So i'm getting a knocking sound coming from the driver side which I can also feel the vibration on the oil dipstick tube. Whats odd is after I drive it so far the ticking gets louder...and i'm having to go under the hood and push the dipstick back down then the noise gets a bit quieter. But why is there a massive vibration feeling coming from the tube of the dipstick? I swapped out my old motor off almost 400,000 for this one from e-bay that only had 126,000 for$850 shipped only to have a problem like this show up. Any ideas would be great. Thank you in advance.

 

You replaced with a 4.0 SOHC from another 4x4 Ranger?

Did you happen to pull the oil pan off and check main and rod bearings prior to install?

 

His profile shows he has a 98 which would have an OHV

 

I replaced it with the same year but it came out of a 1998 explorer which also had the same kind of motor. Someone told me to remove spark plugs and do a compression check to see if there is back pressure with one of the cylinders?

 

Sorry about that, honestly thought the 97 year was last year for ohv.

The 4.0 ohv isn't exactly the smoothest running engine built. Hence why Ford designed a number of features to limit it. Make sure engine mount isn't damaged.

You think that the vibration and noise is related? Yea a compression test would be a good first test to see what the overall health of the engine is. Does the noise sound like rod knock?

 

Yeah the noise is equivalant to the vibration...😕. So im not sure if its built up pressure popping the dipstick up or the vibration....pops it up just enough to make the metal rod (dipstick) to vibrate in the tube and just gets annoying...lol.

 

I know a guy who would just say use some saskatchewan chrome on the ol ferd dipstick and send her. Mint!
