What happened to the old admin Zabeard

Can someone post the link to the thread that explained what happened to Zabeard.

I know he left but was curious as to why and I dont want anyone to say this sh*t is a taboo topic. :sgrin:

I spend alot of time on this forum and I think I have a right to know, lol. If there is no thread can someone be so kind to PM the details.

Again, I am just curious.

Thanks!

StxDangerRanger 12-13-2011 03:14 PM

Yup, the man got engaged. Priorities can change a life quickly.
Hopefully he will still stay active on the forums. He is a pretty cool Guy.

Inactivity, it is a known requirement admins and mods must stay active. He hasn't been on for almost a month now.

For what its worth and before the lock...

Its more of a timing thing in the grand scheme of the forum & Zach. Zach got engaged and was very inactive to begin with. Zach stepped down from his admin position after we had discussed it in various emails of where I stood and where he stood which at times was not together on a lot of topics. While I would like to tell you this is the first time it came up, it wasn't. Zach had threatened to step down last year already and that had 0 to do with any pre-commentary from me but more to do with the communities behavior / posts; that means he blamed certain members for a certain post and he wanted it fixed / removed or else he was stepping down.

I respect Zach as a person and as someone who has helped me with this forum. While I wont dive into some aspects of our online relationship I will say that after his wanting to step down last year, I knew personally it was just a matter of time. Regardless of what I feel is right or wrong, good or bad Zach did step down. And while this very screen capture here can be taken out of context, people need to understand i was not apposed to Zach leaving RF, we are in very capable hands now with the current staff.

I think the sad part is there are a few people who are interested in sharing a version of the story they have rendered up or the truth of it they believe they got from somewhere. Id like to think a screen capture sums up what needs to be said. While the underside of a bus is nice I suppose, I hate the idea of being tossed under it for the sake of discussion. Truth of the matter is we as staff dont always see eye to eye on how things should go, but in the end we work around it and make stuff happen. If someone felt there was in injustice done to Zach I assure you every one of these staff members would say something; give them credit, they are adults, they are smart and they too care about RF like you and I.

With relation to being banned current and in the past, that decision was always made with the admin staff especially Zabeard. Unless it was a personal attack against myself or staff it was always a group decision. I rarely, if ever banned people for no reason. We don't discuss who we ban and we certainly dont discuss why we ban them in public, there is no point, it will achieve nothing and there really isnt room for debate or discussion. Sometimes my choices or our decisions are not always seen as the favorable ones, but regardless sometimes decisions have to be made for what we believe is the best interest of the community.
People need to realize for the longest time the only active admins were Zach and I. All decisions related to bans were enforced by him and I (pre current admin team). Banning people can be crappy, sometimes some people get caught in a crossfire. I will say with the current ban list there is no one / nickname that I see where i say to myself I wish they were still here or feel i was a bit tough on them. I have in the past taken out a few people to sort an issue out quickly only to reinstate some of them after talking to them and understanding where they are at and where I am at. The idea isn't to ban people, its to flourish the community. It is impossible to make everyone see eye to eye with how I and the staff think this should be accomplished.

There isnt much else to say. We are all happy for Zach and his engagement. Forums are to be fun and enjoyable, not a pain in the butt or considered a task. When you reach a certain point its time to let go, that applies to everyone, me included. I try to keep the forums fun for me, fun for you and everyone else. Sometimes I get to make shitty decisions that you wont like and sometimes I have to deal with the tons of pms, emails, hate posts about it......but I try to not make that your problem.

I have no issues answering PMs or does KLC. We wish Zach the best of luck on his engagement and appreciate his service.

Since we are on the topic of admins, I have a few questions for them:
1)How do you become one? Number of posts/ knowledge/recommendation etc?
2) Do you make money from this site or is it just a hobby for you?
3) How many hours a day you have to be on to remain an admin/mod?
4) Do all of you know each other in person or only online?
Just curious about these..

I guess I can answer this...

1) Put in the time. Be active. The current staff was picked by the previous staff. Zach and I decided KLC should be admin, he was made one. Join date is important. If you joined yesterday the chances of becoming an admin tomorrow is slim. But the biggest and most important thing is what the current staff feels, if they want you as staff, chances are you will be staff. :)

2) The site is part of a network of sites I own. There was an investment into this site, I bought it from someone. I run ads to recoup funds, however, money from the sites does go into development, server care & designs etc. The staff is all volunteer.

3) Well, we ask for 60 posts in 60 days to be considered active. That is on the really low side. I would say that figure takes into consideration someone who isn't paying much attention at all to the site but can keep their status. The least active staff member right now has 250+ posts. We also track 'moderating'.

4) I am in Canada so I dont know any of the staff. Some I have spoken to on the phone, lots via email etc.

1. Nomination from another admin and staff agreement.

2. Volunteer.

3. It is difficult to place a number on that question. We mainly go by a combination of moderation activity and number of posts per day. The baseline is obtained from the statistics of each staff member. There are always exceptions though, we do realize everyone needs a break or may have something come up. Communication is key.

4. Some do and some do not. We do stay in close contact via the forum, e-mail, and phone.

Haha, I was a little late to reply.

Mcleary316 12-14-2011 09:05 PM

rick you say you run this and a few other sites. Is that why RF and the ranger station have very similar layouts?

TRS is not affiliated with this forum. I do not recall the last time I visited TRS, but if I remember correctly they use vBulletin forum software. vBulletin is the same forum software this forum uses, which is why you notice similarities in the general layout.

As a supermod with nearly 14,000 posts and a 6.5 year history on another one of rick's sites, I can assure you that he's way better than most site owners/admins.

I had a friend with a ranger once. I mean he's not dead but I don't talk to him now (though I just added him on facebook like two weeks ago). He had a camper shell and some behind-the-seats subs. He liked to cruise before it was illegal (northern california). We made fun of him a little--not because of the truck but because of the dude. One guy even made a bass song (song?) for him called Ranger Bass. It hit pretty hard and had some great bass-head lyrics. I wish I had an mp3 of it.

The ranger was powder blue. and from the 80s I think.

Rick-RF 12-15-2011 08:48 AM

Awww thanks! Glad you came to check out RF :)
