Switching from 3.73 to 4.10

How would you go about switching to 4.10's from 3.73? Some of the trucks I am looking at have the 3.73 and I want the 4.10 since I plan on getting 33's. Is it a big job/cost/pain?

I was quoted $1,000 + dollars to do mine.

I just bought a FX4 level II axle from a junk yard and paid around 500.00 after everything was bought fluid and hardware

I bought an 8.8 and it cost me $120. But I think the average cost is about $500 for gears and install.

Its cheaper just to find a Ranger axle at a junkyard that already has 4.10s. Then bolt it right in

If your 2wd just get a axle. If your 4x4 look for $400-$1000 depending on shop for a gear change front and rear. Yes its a big job, it can take a long time, its a pain if you dont know what your doing.

I'll be nice and won't say anything to a 3 hour axle job with 3 people in 3 hours.

yeah it wasnt bad at all. umm the only reason why it got done in like 3 hours was because i was at school and i decided to do this as a project and it had to be out of the shop before a certain time. so we had to bust our butts to get it done

I did my axle swap, new rear lift shocks, rear lift, and was out the door in like 20-25 minutes.

Awesome dude, I have been looking for a while now for my 4.10. I actually went to the junkyard yesterday looking for one. I have been there so many time that I have lost track. I probably saw a dozen 3.73 7.5 axles and one 8.8 3.27.

yes if you have a 4wd, and want to use the 4wd you MUST change BOTH axles to matching gear ratios or only be off by a tiny amount like 5.14 and 5.13...

I put mine in myself. The fluid is what was the shocker 12.99 for a bottle of fluid.

My buddy and my dad helped. My dad watched mostly as me and my buddy put it in. about 2hrs I think

its like $4-5 at wally world, unless you demand to use the Mobile 1 or Lucas.. then it gets expensive

for the 31 spline Torsen, you must use synthetic fluid, i think thats what he was talking about.

i did both of my axles myself, for $140.

i went from 3.73 to a 8.8 31 spline torsen 4.10 and a front with an aussie locker and 4.10

You can look on the sticker on your door panel and it will give you a code, just look that up here and you'll find out what you have.

Yup you got 3.55 gears same as what I use to have.

Just find a explorer axle with 4.10 then you can have rear disk brakes
they are easy to find

Finding a ranger axle with 4.10 may be more trouble than it is worth unless your lucky like I was. I had 2 different ones to choose from.
