well i bought a set of hella 500s off a buddy at work for 20 bucks. only down fall was the lights came on with lights no wiring or nothing.

i have no idea what relay to buy or where to buy the wiring kit right from hella i got on there web sit but i cant find a place to order stuff. i could wire it all myself if i knew what relay to use.

Just grab a 4 terminal relay from the parts store, just make sure the numbers on it'll match the ones in the Hella instructions. I think you can actually use a 5 pin too but not use the center pin?

relays have different ratings just like fuses......

 

Yes I know they do... but if you'd look at the instructions in the link I sent you'd see that there is a 15A fuse coming off the battery meaning you need a minimum 15A relay. Most are 30 or 40 amps anyways.

 

Hellas come with 40amp relays.

 

You can buy the wiring kit seperately. Just Google it. Autozone, Amazon, and other sites have the wiring kits. I've seen them before.

I may have a new kit laying around after buying replacement fog lights. I used my old wiring on the new lights.

I have about 7 of those wireing kits with relays. All you need is buy a relay and make your harness. Its not hard.

 

It an easy wire if you just want to use a switch to activate them, instead of the headlights.

I THINK it is self explanatory.

Always fuse for the lowest amperage component.
Always fuse power wires.
Alway run wire size one size larger than the total current of the circuit; (i.e. Main power for 20 amp circuit = 12-ga wire but use 10-ga just to make sure all is well. Power for relay/sw should be 18-ga min and use a fuse on that line too). the reason for larger wire is to make sure the lights get the most current they can handle allowing them to run as bright as possible.
Solder as many joints as possible and use Heat shrink on all connection with adhesive inside of the shrink.
Don’t use household wire from Ace or a hardware store to wire your vehicle, it will work harden and crack, causing you major headaches tracking it down.

Here's the wiring kit, but it'd be cheaper to just walk into Walmart and buy a new set of lights with the harness.

Here's a basic diagram for wiring fog lights:



I would beef up the wiring to 16ga minimum & use a 30-40a relay with a 25-30a fuse. Of course, I always use larger diameter wire than necessary.

If you want to get real fancy.... you could use OEM fog switches to control your lights...




I make a wiring kit that converts the OEM fog switches to control basically any 12v light or accessory. I've got relays, OEM fog switches, aftermarket switches, crimp connectors, etc. If you need anything just let me know & I can put together a kit (minus the wire).

I can mod a bezel for you

Mine started as an explorer bezel with 2 openings & I modded the bezel & bracket for the top switch.

Here's a little update to mine:

Just modded the top switch with yellow led.

The diagram isn't the best, but it's the first one I found. The wiring colors don't matter & may be different for most light kits.

Forget wiring kits. i wired my own, just make sure each line has a fuseable link. i run 130W and only have a 10 amp fuse. single wire per light.

 

Question, does the diagram above tie the Hellas to the existing headlights? We don't want the Hellas tied to the headlights, if at all possible. The instructions that came with the lights kind of suck.

 

No it doesnt.

 

Then dont hook into the headlights. just use a hot source somewhere. i have four kc daylighters hooked up by switch and by the brights. so i can use them for either. you can do it however you want.

 

The only difference for wiring them to the headlights is the second 12V source.

Don't know why anyone would want them wired to the headlights anyway

when im in the woods my brights turns them on. when im on the highway only the switch turns them on.

 

how did you run them to come on with brights? i'd be interested in doing that to mine.

 

I just like having them on a separate switch.

i mounted my switches under the steering column, it was terribly easy and they're pretty convenient, you can even learn how to bump them on in a pinch with your knee! i'll post pics if y'all want.
