First off, thanks for nothing. If I had never found this site, I'd be happily driving my stock ranger around without a care in the world. Unfortunately, I stumbled on this site when researching before I bought the truck, and now I can't stop ordering and making stuff. Floor mats, a toolbox, welded up a copy of the under the seat mag light mount, and now there are some KC slimlites in the mail...and so help me the friggin lifted rigs you guys have look sexier every time I open a pic thread. This forum is going to end up costing me a lot of money.

On to the question - I'm in New England, lots of salt on the roads. Is it fair game to just go to town with rust converter and rustoleum products under the truck? Maybe tape off any bushings / rubber etc? I don't have anything that would be close to qualifying as an issue under there yet, and I'd like to keep it that way. Those of you who rust proof, what's your procedure? Thanks a lot.

Yep, the world is our oyster when it comes to the web.... I had the luck of having a friend thats a parts manager at a ford dealership. I live near Chicago and saying the took salt to a new level this year would be an understatement. I never did any undercoating on mine, I hit the under body car wash whenever the weather reaches 30 degrees.

SALT BLOWS! Every spring and fall I go along all the door jams and along the tailgate with white lithium grease. It does not look to pretty but it works great. Wash the undercarriage once or twice a week also helps fight rust from stupid salt.

 

yeah I plan to spray it down whenever I get the chance...but would like to do something more thorough when I get the time to put the kybosh on what's already started and try to take some preventative action. both the POR-15 and chasis saver look like good products and a couple steps up from what I had in mind - thanks guys.

I was the same way didnt think i would have a lifted ranger with 33s.

 

i had chassi saver on my ranger and it started flaking off within a month and a half. i redid every thing with rust bullet and its been almost 6 months and it still looks like i just painted it.

 

rust bullet looks like good stuff. How are you guys applying this stuff? You taking the bed off and getting right down to the frame or just lifting it up / crawling around under there and coating everything you can get at?

 

Might as well take the bed off its easy and you will get it on better.. I will be applying some when i have my bed off doing my bodylift!

I did rustoleum from the can, just slapped it on thick and it's tough as nails it's been a year maybe and it's still there today. Hell my old ranger you see in my avatar is rustoleum sunburst yellow!

 

I still would like someone to cover the issue of the thick wax that ford put on the frame... anything you put on is not going to stick to the wax. Stripping it off would be a frickin' pain. unless someone has a trick to it...

This is why im thinking of just cheaping out and going with regular black spraypaint and just spraying the exposed rust to keep the moisture sealed out.. maybe a quick shot of rust converter under that.

I never hear anyone mention Eastwood Co. they make alot of specialty paints for vehicle frames and parts. I would think a lot of people would have known about them.
