Icon5 Oil Pressure Light ( Low Oil light ) ??

Hey everyone, first time posting on the site. So I have a 2005 Ranger FX4 level 2, 4.0L SOCH. Just about 97xxx kms. Very well maintained. The oil light comes on every now and then and I'm not really sure why. I was thinking about putting a floating oil pressure gauge in and I was wondering what to look out for? Or if there are any hints/ tips to make things a little easier. Sorry if there is already a post about this subject. I Have looked around for a few days off and on and no luck. So don't be scared to slap me in the face with the link that will direct me to this subject. Thanks Justin

This is getting rather interesting. This must be about the seventh post this week about oil pressure gauge or sensor problems. Quite unusual for a generally random problem to show up like a sudden rash.
I'm not slapping you in the face , rather I'm wondering if there is an underlying problem lately with sensors or something else causing this.

Brand new sensor 3 weeks ago. Still the same thing. A fella would know if there was no oil pressure because you would her the lifters ticking and slapping like crazy. So I'm going to assume the sending unit is still ok. Basically what I want to do is install a gauge showing me actual oil pressure for piece of mind if the light keeps coming on and off. I heard that the sensor is a N/C contact switch and if the pressure drops below 8 psi the contact opens thus causing the light to come on.

Exactly right. Most Ranger gauges (water temp and oil gauge) are essentially idiot lights. And on your 05, you have plenty of idiot lights. If the oil pressure sensor (or switch) was replaced last week and the light is STILL coming on, there's an issue somewhere. The sensor swap is the 1st cheap thing to do, to try to correct the issue.

The 3.0L has a cam synchro issue, not too sure if it's similar on the 4.0L's.

Does anyone have a " How to" or a sticky of how to install a floating oil pressure gauge? Or just tips for things to look out for when installing a gauge?

i'd try checking out the wiring loom for damage.. the wire for oil pressure switch may be contacting ground or have a brake somewhere that may be braking connection sometimes. could cause light to come on like that
