14 mpgs? Really?

I just got my ranger this week, and I'm finding out that the gas mileage sucks... Is this normal to get this bad of gas mileage for a 4.0L or is there something wrong with my truck?

14's about normal in-town for your truck. It's fairly old too, so it might need some upkeep/maint to get it back to running properly and mpg's should bump up.

I was getting around 13-14ish for a while, I finally did a tuneup and i'm pulling around 17ish around town now. Mine's an auto if hat makes a difference, I'm also not exactly easy on the skinny peddle. When was last tuneup? Do you know?

Ill have to look through the old records to see when the last tune up was. The guy I bought it from has every record possible of everything he's done to the truck. He was the original owner.

I'm gunna replace the plugs here this weekend, I put in some injector cleaner. I'm getting an exhaust installed soon. And hopefully a K&N intake soon. Do you have any other ideas to increase the gas mileage?

Really? It doesn't help the sound or improve mileage? At all?

You bought a truck.

Unfortunately that means you will not get the greatest MPG's

Look up the airbox mod, costs a fraction of the $ and you still have a 'cold' air intake.

That seems pretty normal, I get 13-14mpg, that is 100% city, no highway. Now on the highway I can get almost 20mpg. And sorry to say exhaust wont help you much, I did not notice any improvement, but it sure sounds cool though lol.

agreed, pretty normal, but before you go modding, do a tune up:
Air Filter
Plugs
Wires
Fuel Filter
Clean MAF and TB (mass air and throttle body)
Switch to a better gas (shell/chevron)
Check and maintain proper air pressure

Those alone should not cost much going through Rock Auto and will be better than the exhaust for now, then i would do intake exhuast underdrive pulley and tune.

Easy on the right foot.. I eased up on mine And Im getting 19 now instead of 15. Try to keep the rpms as low as possible... Yes That means go the speed limit when you can. I got like an extra 45 miles to my tank (I fill up around a quarter Tank) just by doing 55-60 instead of 70 on the highway, and slower acceleration..

Doing a tune up and clean oil will help too. Along with proper tire inflation (harder your tires less rolling resistance.)

change driving habits and do a tune up. its hard to stay out of that skinny pedal sometimes but thats the single greatest factor in gas mileage.

Keep in mind the truck was rated at 16/18 with grandma driving, at least mine was.

Plugs, wires, filters, and a new pvc. Maybe in order, but i doubt it will increase much. Weather has a dramatic effect on mileage on these trucks.

Depending on the OAT the mileage will go up with temperature. 70's will get you close to 16 city, depending on how much idling you do. Below freezing I dip into the 12's. Below zero im hitting mid tens.

Tires a role in mileage, if they are larger than stock that's good for a hit too. Air pressure needs to correct as well.

GL with the new ride.
