So here's the short version of my story....

Truck is a 1986 Ford Ranger 2.3 Manual transmission

Anytime I park her uphill she struggles to start (Even will over half a tank of gas).
It will start for a few seconds then die shortly after, I can feather the gas and keep
her going for a little bit but this is annoying and only happens when it's facing uphill.

If I back down to level ground or am facing down hill this problem doesn't exist so I
assumed it was low fuel not getting to the pickup but with over half a tank this
doesn't seem possible.

Any help or suggestions??? This is really annoying to deal with and I'd love to figure
out what is causing this. Thanks in advance!

 

are the 86's carbed?

 

That's what I was thinking.
The float is sticking.

 

Either the floats or the fuel is just draining out oF the carb.

 

This could be possible but the 86's are fuel injected...... so lets try some
more suggestions haha

 

cloged fuel filter in the tank or the one buy the engine. bad fuel pump maybe a bad sensor

 

The pickup tube has become disconnected from the fuel pump. It doesn't reach the bottom of the tank anymore.

 

So a new fuel pump would be the only way to fix this?

I've changed the inline fuel filter so thats new but ive never had a pickup tube drop off from the pump haha

 

idk if that would be it it sounds like a bad pump. take the 4hr and drop your tank and find out lol

 

Yeah I'd rather not haha.

What I don't understand is why it only happens at startup, once I'm driving it's fine
if the pickup was messed up wouldn't it stall when it gets to a certain point like below
half a tank or so?

As stated above I have already changed my fuel filter, also I've changed my plugs and wires.

 

only thing i can say is pull you line of before your filter turn key on and see how much gas come out if its alot then your fuel pump and filter in the tank should be good

 

my 87 was carbed
but it was also a base xl model ( power NOTHING, i loved it)

it does sound as if the fuel is straining to get to the engine and i know some models had 2 fuel pumps. (one in tank the other on the frame)
check and see if you have 2 pumps....one may have failed over the years and you've been using just one

 

I haven't gotten around to checking the truck yet since it's finals week but when I changed the filter I don't recall seeing an external pump but I could be mistaken.
