XCal 1 and Xcal 2 differences?

XCal 1 and Xcal 2 differences?

There's a guy on RPS selling an unlocked XCal1 tuner for $100. I'm wondering if this would be a good opportunity to FINALLY reprogram my computer for my tires/gear ratio, without wasting money on an XCal 2 whose features my manual tranny wouldn't benefit from anyway. So what does the Xcal 2 have that the 1 doesn't have? (I'm hoping it's a bunch of stuff that doesn't apply to my truck). Does the 1 have anything at all that my truk would benefit from, other than reprogramming for my 33's?

the problem is finding someone that has the software to program the xcal(1). don't take the sellers word for it, make contact with someone who CAN do it, before purchasing.

I'm gonna ramble for a sec. I looked at a Mustang Cobra II (Mustang II). I asked about replacement parts since the interior was trashed and major rust problems. He said they have everything in Dallas (Dallas Mustangs).

I called them and they have O for Mustang ii's. I got on a forum for II's and found out the aftermarket made nothing for them.

Moral of the story- make sure it can be tuned or its a fancy paper weight. Also get a real quote on getting it tuned. My offer for the Cobra II went from the asking price of $2,000 down to $500 based on the info I recieved from asking about parts.

Man that's a bummer.

I figured all the same guys who do Xcal 2 and 3 tunes would be able to set me up (Doug at bamachips, Fred at Rogue Performance, etc). Good idea to confirm before doing anything else tho

Rogue doesn't. he got in the tuning business at the XcalII level, so never bought the technology for the xcal I.

Doug sold out to American Muscle, which no longer tunes for Rangers. At least that is the case the last I heard/read anything about it.

There's also the issue of taking the tuner back to stock before it is shipped to you. If that wasn't done by the seller, it will cost as much as buying a x3 brand new.

What if I just want to use it to program my gear ratio and tire size to correct my speedometer? Does the seller still need to revert it to stock?

Supposedly from what I remember reading was that the xcal1 could program an infinite number of vehicles if they were the right application, unlike others that make you return the vehicle to stock before you can use the tuner on a different truck. Apparently thats why no one tunes them and why they are so cheap to buy now. IDK if this is true or not I just remember someone saying it.

John, why not just go with the scangauge? Can't you also reprogram using it? Should be comparable in price..

Just throwing out an alternative idea. I apologize if you've already looked into it

Just buy one of those Superlift speedo correctors then, they're cheap

Freddie, I was thinking about that but I think the SG only shows the correct readings on the SG itself and not on the cluster. If I ever do get a SG it will be for other purposes

They're $200 so it's still a decent amount cheaper than a tuner + tunes

it was mentioned that american muscle won't tune rangers anymore. couldn't they just tune for a v-6 stang or is it more complicated then that?

'98-00 Rangers cannot be calibrated with a tuner. An inline calibrator from the ABS/Speed Sensor wire will allow recalibration. The unit Korey mentioned will work, but there are more cost effective solutions. I believe JEGS sells a JET module for ~$100 that is equivalent to the Superlift one. Dakota Digital makes the module I used, and has been more than perfect, and is cheaper. It has more options than the Superlift dial in type.

The X-Cal should have to be returned to stock.

I believe the Scangauge does not have some features or is not compatible with the '98 Ranger.
