I just called my local junkyard and ordered my rear end that I wanted for pickup on Friday.

It's an 8.8 4.10 L/S 31 Spline out of an 03 Level II.

$330 plus tax.

I am so excited to swap her in and I can't wait till winter to see if I get stuck!!

I have 4 quarts of 80W-90 and all I need now is the Additive Friction Modifier from Ford. I think that's all I need???

I am can't wait to get it in. WOOT!

 

It's a gear driven limited slip, it does not need friction modifier. I forget exactly which gear oil the torsen diff needs though, someone else will tell you.
You'll still be plenty capable of getting stuck but it will be a big improvement! Get ready to practice counter-steering.

75w140 is what it calls for. No friction mod.

Lol I need it, no 4x4 equals no mudding. 4x2 with L/S equals light mudding.

You need to lock your 4.10s though. It helps a lot.

 

Whats the main issues with the torsen? Mechanically and drivability? Does it have any known mechanical issues and as far as locking while driving (especially in snow) what should I look out for?

 

No drivability issues. Any limited slip is different than an open diff in snow, that's all.

JESUS CHRIST 75W140 is like $18 a quart!! My 7.5 inch gear oil was like $6!!!

 

Ya, driving limited is a little different than open. When I take off now when its wet, the back end starts walking around. Does the same in snow.

 

75W140 is definitely not cheap but you won't even use all of 3 quarts.

 

Are you sure it's not 85W-140. That's what Autozone.com is telling me. Someone check their owners manual stat!

Yep yep, I got it at Napa today for $14 a quart. Not too bad, best price I found. Valvoline Syn-Power.

Lol if I switch my tranny fluid to Valvoline Synthetic Mecron I will be running my entire drive train on Valvoline Synthetics. Nice.

 

I hate when the people at Autozone do that **** and try and tell you what you need when you already know for a fact what you need.

 

Not just 75w140, but synthetic 75w140 is called out for the Torsen!

 

I don't think you can get a non-synthetic 75W140...

 

Nope. Synthetic only. Most heavy duty gear oil on the market.
