you are right the 02 expo is a sohc, and the 99 ranger is ohc,so you will need the motor, trans, wiring, computer.and if the ranger is 4wd then you need a 4wd ohc tranny,it will fit i got a motor out of a 99 expo in my ranger,it's a direct swap

Ya, your 99 would be a 0HV motor, and the 02 is a SOHC motor. What tranny are you running? If im not mistaken, 02 is when the explorer switched to IRS and the trans changed in a few ways as well, im not sure how compatible it is compared to the 2001 and down explorers. You are definitely going to need all the electronics and brain box for the motor regardless though.

If it would work by swapping the engine trans harness and computer over I think it would be worth it. I just did an engine swap in my truck two weeks ago (SOHC) and I had to unplug and remove the entire engine/trans harness with the engine. The trans is only a few bolts to the cross member and a few to the transfer case.

Basically you have to remove a lot of stuff anyways... IF it will work I say do it

i would say part it out and just go buy another ohv 4.0 from a ranger/expo,unless you want that extra 40hp you get from the sohc and alot of work from doin it

Don't worry too much man, i am kinda thinking out loud here too! lol. The motor is worth it for ya regardless of what the rest of the explorer is (especially if its a lower mileage SOHC) The only issue i see is that the 01+ ranger and 1997-2001 explorer comes with the 5R55E tranny. The 2002 explorer is the start of the 5R55W trans which is kinda known for being a PITA to work on and kind of a pile. So what you could do, is take that SOHC out and go looking for a 01+ ranger or 1997-2001 Explorer and yank your tranny and electronics off of it. Then you have a better all around combo.

And if your really going through all that work... Find and expo with a 5.0 in it and actually do all that work for an upgrade. Just my $.02
