Hey all what is the valve called that connects the hoses from the water pump housing and the tstat housing to the core inlet and outlet called? It has a vacuum on it and when the heat is turned on it opens the valve to allow coolant into the core. I replaced it on my wifes old car and I can't remember what it is called. Mine is leaking a bit and I was wondering if I could replace it without removing my coolant? It looks like I can if I hold the hoses up but I'm not sure. Thanks all!

 

it's called a heater bypass valve. it should be open all the time except when you hit MAX AC. then it closes all the water off to the heater core. yes, it can be replaced without draining the coolant. just make sure you crack the radiator cap open before taking the valve off. and top off the coolant when you are done.

Thanks. I knew it was a simple answer. Just couldn't think of it.

 

i would bleed the coolant as well, as you'll probably end up with an air bubble in there
