I haven't been on this site in years since I got the ranger just how I want it. With an estimated 25,000 miles in 4 low roaming all over the west climbing the highest and most remote roads i can find she is still going strong now with 77,000 and nothing more then following the routine maintinance and extra fluid changes because of the dust.

The cost of gas is killing me and i'm thinking an economy tune might pay for itself these days. I'm not sure what has changed with the tuners in the past few years. Used to be bama tuner was the way to go.

What sort of improvement could I get with an 87 economy tune? I average about 16 now. If I could get 20 out of it that would be signifigant at 3.00$ or more a gallon. I have no desire to gain any more power. I drive like a granpa on the highway and in 4 low there is ample power. The truck is a 4.0 manual with 4:10's and 265/75/16's

While i'm on here... Is anyone making rock sliders and bumpers for an 05 ranger yet? Have any new lift kits come out?

those pics are fantastic man absolutely fantastic. ya know a good set of plugs wires and pack will help. a k and n air filter supposedly gives u 5 percent better mileage i have not clocked mine. i have slo heard a large fuel filter helps. good luck buddy

 

I doubt you will see that much improvement with 87 test. 93 test maybe, I went from about 15-16 mpg to 19mpg average with 93 test but I believe a lot of that improvement came from transmission tuning.
With yours being a manual transmission I think you are definitely asking too much out of 87 test.

However there are things that can be done to help fuel mileage that I think a lot of tuners may overlook such as lowering idle speed, leaning out the start-up/warm-up a/f ratio and increasing the egr flow since you don't have a problem driving like an old man.

Gaining more power is actually your friend, there are a lot of things tuning wise were more power and more fuel efficiency go hand in hand. Think of it this way, the more power you have the less throttle you need. 93 octane won't give you more top end power but it will greatly improve mid range power and thus improve drivability. Stay away from aftermarket air intakes. An under drive pulley would help your fuel mileage I would imagine. IMO with the mileage you put on your truck you will recover your money from the tuner.

 

With mods that give you more power, they also can give better mpgs, but the kicker is if your flooring it all the time then your not going to see any difference. under drive pulleys, intake/exhaust all will help along with getting a tuner with custom tunes to go along with the mods, you'll see a nice difference. nice pictures by the way.

 

here is another question for you gear heads.

How about a high altitude tune? I'm not sure what could be done but a tune to help the power when over 6,000 or 7,000 would be intersting. The only time I feel I could use some more power is mountain driving when the truck is loaded with camping gear. Trying to climb the steep grades at 9,000 plus feet in the sierra nevada and the rockies sucks.

I don't know enough about it. Maybe there is nothing to be done because its just a simple fact that there is not enough oxygen to produce the power.

how much is zaebeard doing slidders for? I have no way to jack up my truck in the back with the hi-lift and its going to leave me stranded one day.

My truck misses when it idles. I guess it just sort of shakes. I replaced fuel filter and had injectors cleaned but did not help. So I think it is probably time for new wires and plugs. Did not consider a new coil pack but i'm open to the idea if it can help fuel economy.

what would be good plugs wires and pack to go with? I was just going to stick to factory parts.
