Void vehicle warrenty for larger tires?
Void vehicle warrenty for larger tires?
Called the stealership where sarah bought her truck and asked if they can recalibrate the speedo. first the service guy said no, then yes but it will void the vehicle warrenty from Ford because the truck wasnt made for the larger tires...is he feeding me a bunch of horse **** or is it true?
going from a 245/75/16 to a 285/75/16...

They can try to void the warranty on certain powertrain items based on larger tires. However, anything not related to the larger tires they cannot void. It's the risk you take when you modify a vehicle.
For instance, fry some u-joints and they'll tell you it could be from the larger tires and you may lose fighting it. However, have a connecting rod break and they'd have a hard time winning that one.
You can't just change the weight/loading/dynamics of a vehicle and expect the manufacturer to cover all possible ramifications of it.
Just beware of the dealer saying the "vehicle warranty is voided" because it's NOT. It's just certain items they may be able to not honor -- not the WHOLE vehicle warranty.

yeah i know, but he said the ENTIRE warrenty will be voided. i know if she frag's a u-joint climbing some ruts in centrellia the warrenty wont cover it with the larger tires...;-)
id like some rubuttle to agrue with him so i can make a point...because i think he's feeding my bull****. the only things i can think of that'd be "voided" could be the auto tranny and the like...

called another dealer and they didnt say much about the warrenty issue besides get the tires on and tranny recalibrated at the same time or it'll **** the truck up and all (which i knew and reason i want it done...)...guess it depends on the dealer itself?
why couldnt ford be nice and let me do it myself like on my F-150...

ya got off the phone with another dealer and he said "wtf, going up to that size wont matter...as long as u dont have a lift kit or anything"
only thing he said was he didnt know if the 04s could be recalibrated...
the dealer she bought it from is a chicken ****, hole in the wall...(aka small place)...

What is the cost to have the truck recalibrated? I would say if they would do it for 50 dollars or that is to much money I would do a x2 tuner then you could change tire size gears when you make changes to the truck plus more
power and better mpg's just my .02.

It's illegal for them to do unless a problem can be proven that it's related to the aftermarket parts. Do a search for a document called "Magnusson Moss Warranty Act of 1975," you will find everything you need to know there. I have a couple hard copies stashed in my files just in case I need to break 'em out.
it would not be illegal for anything drive line related
and since a 2004 has a VSS which sends signals to lots of on board devices they could also LEGALLY link over size tires to any problems manifested in that loop

heh, $300 is still a lot for now...maybe after the new year.
sarah called the salesman and he said point blank, only thing that is effected is driveline like an axle prematurly wearing or the tranny failing early. they will say "oh this has larger tires and caused it". i dunno and im begining to not care at this point. no one can give me a straight answer.
splitfire, i know about the magnusom act and thats why i made this post. i guess ill have to print a copy out and give it to them...
i dunno first they told me $40...then they said they cant...
