Never changed one on a ranger, but i have changed one on a mustang and a jeep.

 

it should have 3 inlets into it .... and on the hoses there should be green or orange clips that are holding the lines to the fuel filter ... you will need to press IN on those clips ( do not remove them ) while u press the clip in push the fuel line closer onto the fuel filter and it should alow it to relese and then you pull it off, word of warning carefull it is under pressure gas hurts the eyes lol

good luck ... kind of a pain in the *** at first but cake once you do it once.

also it is located on the drivers side fram rail near the fuel tank

 

$75 for a fuel filter change? Do it yourself.

This is how I did it when I changed mine...
1. Buy fuel filter, fuel line clip things (they are in the Help section of the parts store IIRC) and get some rags. Get the tool if you need it. It's cheap. I didn't use one on my truck.
2. Remove fuel pump fuse and start engine. Let it run until it dies.
3. Unbolt old filter and pry out the white clip on the line that is by itself (NOT the green and orange ones!!!). Watch out for the gas that will come out.
4. Press down carefully on the green and orange things on the other two lines. The fuel filter should come right off now.
5. Put lines on new filter. Install new white clip.
6. Put fuse back in. I turned the key to on to start the fuel pump, but I didn't start the truck. I left it there for a few seconds before starting so that there would be fuel in the lines. I have no idea if it actually helped anything, but I heard that I should do it, so I did.
7. Check for any leaks.

 

i wanna jump on this thread for a second:

any way to tell if you need a new fuel filter.. or is there certain mileage checkpoints that you should change it

 

Ford suggests changing it every 30K miles.

Yeah it's definitely time for one. Ford & GM fuel filters get surface rust on them when they know it's time to change them actually it's wierd how that works. But they're cake. On mine you don't even need any tools. You just push all 3 quick disconnects and pop the filter out of the C-shaped holder and you're done. It's mindlessly simple but it's an easy half an hour of labor at a dealership so I'd try selling you one too and convincing you that you couldn't do it but unless you're retarded I'm sure you can do it.

Change it...you'll probably notice a difference

 

i just changed mine today. i took my truck over to the ford dealer that my friend works at so he could slide my replacement driver's side cv axle in for me (bought it off a member on here). anyways.. it worked out great (no more clicking noise on left turns!!!!) for the hell of it, while the truck was in the air, i mentioned that i still have the stock fuel filter, so my friend went ahead and replaced it for me... so it wasn't hard at all for me, lol.

im about 75-80 miles away from needing my next oil change, so he told me to come back next saturday, and he'd do it for free cause he has an oil filter for my truck for some reason. i love having friends, lol.

 

You guys with the younger trucks are lucky. Ones like mine and older used the old Ford spring load coupling that you have to use a sepcial tool to get it off and it's a PITA!. I spent 3+ hours trying to get it off. I wish Ford would make the newer style fitting that I could retrofit. Next filter change I'm going to let the local garage do it.

 

changed my B2s today.

1. open gas cap
2. remove protective cover from frame
3. disconnect the 2 lines to FF, let gas drip into a pan
4. put lines back into new fuel filter and bolt back in place.
its an 89 and took about 30 min. no more hesitation when i press on the gas.
