I've got a 2000 ranger xlt 3.0l 4x4 flareside. I recently noticed that I have gas slowly leaking (more like little droplets) from under my truck whenever I gas up. I checked it out and the filler neck is pretty rusty and is definitely the culprit.

So I had a couple of questions:

1. How easy would it be for me to change fuel filler necks by myself?

and also,

2. Do they make different filler necks for the flareside and fleetside models? I've heard that you need to find one specific to your bed style and I've heard that it doesn't matter?

Good question. I too have a Flairside (old school: step side). I would have to say that the filler neck is going to be different, by way of being a bit shorter, since the side walls of a flairside bed are narrower then the fleetside bed.

I've seen a proceedure for removing a bed which included how to disconnect the filler neck tube from the fillor door area, but I've never seen where you can get to the filler tube with the bed installed.

 

resurrecting an old thread here, but swapping out the filler neck is an easy job once you have the right part. 3 screws and 2 worm clamps and 15 minutes, as long as the hoses connecting the neck to the tank are intact. The bigger one may be more cracked due to it getting dried out by the alcohol in fuel, so if it looks like it's gonna go you're best to pull the bed off and do the both parts at the same time. I wish I had...also, if your truck is in the 100k + mileage range, or any multiple of it, do the fuel pump as well. Trust me. I'm on pump #3 and I'm at ~250k miles.
