I have a five speed manual transmission and a few weeks ago I noticed a rattling sound coming from near the transmission as if something was loose and it would worsen when I would let off the clutch. A few days later I was taking it to get looked at and it felt like it just fell out of gear and wouldn't move anymore. The shifter will go in place though it's a little more rough then before and when you hit the gas it makes a not so pleasant grinding sound. I'd like to have an idea of what I'm working with before I take it to the shop. This may not be the right section to post this question in but if someone could point me in the right direction or maybe give me some advice it would be much appreciated.

 

Put it in 4th gear and see if truck moves, if so then input shaft gear in trans is stripped, 4th gear is a direct 1:1 connection to output shaft.
But it reads like trans will need to come out, in any case
