Difference in 2001 and up 4.0L engines?
Just being curious, I checked out LKQ for used engines for my 2003 4WD 4.0L Ranger. What was weird is they had 4.0L marked as:
2001 - 2003
2004
2005 - 2006
2007 - 2011
I'm wondering, does anyone have any idea why they'd do this? Perhaps ECU was different for those year ranges?
I was always thinking, if I couldn't be in a position to do a VW TDI swap, that I'd find the lowest mileage newest year 4.0L I could find, put in new OE tensioners and spark plugs, swap accessories over (and I was under impression even a 2011 4.0L block would work for even a 2001 4.0L Ranger), and be off and running.
Is this not the case?

Those would most like be complete engines, so yes there would be changes in sensor placement and around 2005 I think they switched to 1 ECT sensor for computer and dash gauge instead of 2.
But yes, long block(block and heads only) should work from 2001 to 2011
